it pains me to ruin perfectly good milk on an extra hot drink
Koelakanth
We had a gentleman order an extra hot chai, the barista unironically made it 200°F and the guest said it was “too cold”
grey_pilgrim_
And here I am asking for kids temp. Burning your tongue sucks. I don’t see how people drink these molten lava drinks.

I started recommending au lait’s to my extra hot people, I really think some people want a hand warmer that they can keep on their desk and sip all day. An au lait will give them more of the piping hot stuff to warm the cup without having to scorch the milk.

Had someone get a hot drink but add cold foam (whatever). She then wanted me to remake it because it wasn’t hot.
Lady, you got cold foam on top. Your first sip isn’t going to be scalding.
AudiHoFile
Bro and they immediately slam it down. I genuinely don’t understand how.

How about extra hot americano. I saw another barista say that the customer wants the mug warmed up first. (Our mugs are prewarmed anyway) No. This was a to-go cup. Am I supposed to steam water thats already 90°F degrees?

Unrelated but I need to make more of these comics

I know it’s not universal but I was told once older people get extra hot cuz as we age our taste buds lose their sensitivity so they want the hot sensation

I really like your cap where’d you get it?

We have a regular who always orders a molten hot mocha… I generally don’t make her drink, as she comes in before my shift. But the last time I had the misfortune of making her drink I made it as hot as I could- that pitcher of milk was about to gain sentience and was screaming for dear life to be put out of it’s misery.
She made her husband bring it back because it wasn’t hot enough, and asked me to put it in the microwave… I advised against it but gave in after they wouldn’t take no for an answer.
As expected about 5 seconds in it exploded, and the cup started to give (paper cup). I literally brought it out with a pair of tongs because I couldn’t hold it, and to prove a point.
She looked at it with glee and said ‘oh it should be perfect’- but I said no ma’am. Not only is this cup a hazard but I took a temp reading and it’s over 200 degrees.. I do not feel good about giving this to you, I’m remaking it and I’m not putting it in the microwave again
While she looked horrified when I told her just how hot it was, she kept going on about how she just loved the taste of the burnt milk 😭🫣☠️
In my head I’m like please just burn your own milk at home and keep us out of it.
Creative_Impress9427
I cant even handle normally hot drinks bc I only drink cold drinks, these people must’ve burnt everything off

Not a barista, but a chef. I had a server come back and tell me an older lady at his table wanted her bowl of gumbo to be “as hot as it could possibly be”. So I put a serving in a sauté pan and got it bubbling. Poured it over the rice to immediately give to the server, who immediately walked it to the table. Again, it was actively boiling when I poured it in the bowl.
She still sent it back for being too cold. The server just nuked the bowl for 3 mins and then it was fine. 😅

Conversely I had a customer who would order a hot latte with ice cubes added. We offered to steam it cooler but he said no, full temp with ice cubes ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I once had a regular who would ask for it “extra extra hot” and so every time I would steam the milk until right before it boiled over and then she would go “ahh, perfect” I never understood

As a former barista who wore a hat every shift. I feel seen by this post it.

I think with older people in particular, they are used to microwaving there morning coffee and have seared receptors off. So what to us seems hot is lukewarm for them.
DisconcertingTablet
My partner drinks hot americanos black, immediately after receiving them.
She doesn’t drink lattes.
And we all know the hot water from the machine is hotter than average steamed milk.
And she calls ME sensitive.
(And it’s why I’m so attracted to her)
Rakins_420
I’ll never understand people who order extra hot and then take sweet time picking it up. I just KNOW I’m making that drink twice.
Hot_Historian_6967
Ya some folks at our shop will order an “extra hot americano”… I have zero control over our hot water temp but okay
tryingnottocryatwork
i ask for extra hot because i’m a sipper and my coffee ends up lukewarm by the time im drinking it. i like to do mundane things when i have a coffee, like grocery shop or go on a walk, and it’s nice to be able to drag it out without sacrificing the warmness
robotkitten69
I put extra hot water on the handle so they will burn their hands before saying anything
Nick_pj
I’ve worked in a couple of cafes in Australia that flat-out refused to do this shit, and it was bliss. Servers would just say “sorry, we don’t do that here” and politely point the customer in the direction of another cafe.
komakaze666
this one time (about 2017-2018ish) a man asked for a water. i got him a grande ice water, and he said he wanted a hot water, venti sized. (this is how you could have started your order, my guy). so i get him a venti hot cup of water tap that was part of the old BUNN brewers. homeboy walks to the condo bar, takes the lid off the cup, just shotguns 20oz of scalding hot liquid at a whooping 198°F (we checked the temp of the water afterwards because wtf). he didn’t even flinch.
teamakesmepee
Ever since it got cold here, people have basically just demanded I burn the milk to an extreme lol. It makes me sad
Guava_Nectar_
i only order extra hot if i’m bringing a drink home to someone, but generally i prefer milk steamed to a temperature that won’t mess with the quality.
TodayKindOfSucked
Wait some people drink the extra hot coffee IMMEDIATELY?!?!
KitchenerBarista
Only time it made sense was I had a guy with brain damage/head trauma and the nerves in his mouth weren’t sensitive to heat. He asked it extra extra got so he could feel it at all. Is that necessarily good for his future health? Idk, but it made him happy.

We have our little kids fluffy set at 55. Extra hot is a few degrees warmer, so that’s fine. Have a regular who asks for extra extra hot. Made it 70 then week later he’s specifying he wants it 85 degrees c or 185 f. How do you even know you want that hot. Asked the manager and she said we could do it but to warn the customer. We triple stack his takeaway cup to protect us and him

2 reoccuring customers come to mind immediately: The woman who worked next door and needed her latte to be 189°F exactly, no more and no less. I don’t know if she kept a thermometer back at her job or what but on a couple separate occasions she came back and demanded that I remake her drink (always a large vanilla) to exactly 189°, despite us trying to explain that it would scald the milk. And then.. extra extra hot large almond milk latte girl with NO FOAM. NONE. Wanted even the microfoam spooned out and tossed. I would end up having to steam 2 pitchers-worth of almond milk bc, even if you do not let it aerate fr, something about almond milk just can’t help but foam up past a certain temperature.

I had someone ask me if they could get their cold brew extra hot lmao what
Also extra hot almond milk is fucking disgusting and I feel like I’m committing a crime doing it
lyradunord
It’s insane. “Warm” is the regular way to steam milk in any other coffeeshop because anything hotter burns the milk. Extra hot people just don’t have taste i guess…literally too, those taste buds are probably burnt clean off
