A new culinary hotspot has opened its doors in a Sault residential neighbourhood, offering locals a taste of good Italian food and community spirit

A new restaurant with a very appropriate name has opened in the Sault’s east end.

Co-owner Tony Spina was sitting in his truck staring at the building, trying to figure out what to call it, when it hit him.

“We’re in a residential neighbourhood, around the corner,” Spina told SooToday.

With that, the new eatery became known as Around The Corner Cantina.

“I’ve always dreamed of opening a restaurant or pub, and I had always wanted it in this location. When it finally became available, I didn’t hesitate. I jumped on the opportunity,” Spina said.

The property at 2200 Queen St. E. had previously been the home of Absolutely Delicious, a popular restaurant, bakery and takeout, and prior to that, the site of a Mac’s convenience store.

Around The Corner Cantina sells big sandwiches, pizzas and panzerotti.

Spina contacted his brother-in-law Terry Young to ask if he would like to partner with him as co-owner of the new restaurant.

Young agreed.

“I couldn’t ask for a better business partner. Terry is an incredible chef and a huge asset in the kitchen,” Spina said.

After viewing the space, the business partners signed the lease on the building in September.

It took weeks of renovations and decorating before Around The Corner Cantina opened its doors to customers on Dec. 1.

Operating the restaurant is very much a family affair.

Spina said he’s grateful to Young and his own family members for their work in making the eatery a success.

“Over the past two weeks, Sault Ste. Marie has truly shown up to support us and support local. For that, I am incredibly grateful and I look forward to what the future holds,” Spina said.
