WEST SALEM — The Northwestern Ruritan Club held its Christmas dinner and meeting Dec. 8 at Northwestern High School, according to a community announcement.

The meeting included the installation of the club’s 2026 officers by Rick Dilyard, the 2026 Ohio District governor. Dilyard emphasized the importance of maintaining virtue and encouraging young people to appreciate the freedoms the country offers.

A night of celebration and service

The meeting began with members singing “America” and an invocation by Jim Johnson. A ham dinner was served by the school’s chefs, and the Northwestern High School Choir, led by Leslie Andrews, performed Christmas songs.

Treasurer Chuck Beck reported on the successful packing of packages for the “Huskie Brigade,” which supports Northwestern area soldiers. Packages were sent to 24 soldiers, and Beck expressed appreciation for the contributions and assistance from club members. He also mentioned receiving “paper work” from the State Highway Department regarding the club’s participation in trash pickup along St. Rt. 301 from Pleasant Home to Lattasburg in 2026.

Husky Salute Squad honors veterans

Kevin and Joyce Keener provided an update on the “Husky Salute Squad,” which was involved in the “National Wreathes Across America Day Ceremony” on Dec. 13. Seven cemeteries in the Northwestern School District were served, with 654 known veterans’ graves honored. The West Salem Legion Rifle Squad participated in the opening ceremony at the West Salem American Legion Hall, and the Northwestern High School FFA and others assisted in placing the wreaths.

Bell ringing and community outreach

Many members signed up for the Salvation Army bell ringing at Buehler’s Milltown Store on Dec. 16. It was noted that few Northwestern students are aware of the Ruritan Club and its activities, and there is hope to increase awareness in the future.

The next dinner meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Jan. 12 at Northwestern High School, with club committees set to discuss plans for the year. The directors will meet at 6 p.m.
