NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — Park Circle Cares hosted a free food giveaway Saturday morning at North Charleston High School, serving about 175 families facing food insecurity during the holiday season.

The nonprofit distributed 8,000 pounds of produce and 1,000 pounds of meat as families lined up around the school building. Nonprofit organizers said they are seeing higher attendance as people seek extra support over the holidays.

“We have seen the increase in people coming out over the holidays and it says something that they are braving this weather just to be able to feed their families for the holidays and with our volunteers, we’re just excited that we’re able to do it,” Park Circle Cares Volunteer Coordinator Shawn Felder said.

The monthly food distribution takes place on the third Saturday of each month at 1087 West Montague Avenue. Felder said the food truck arrives between 7:45 and 8 a.m., and volunteers begin distribution immediately.

“They pick their own produce after we’ve given them their protein. They get as much of it as they want,” Felder said. “We’re able to not only give back to our immediate neighbors but then they’re able to share with their neighbors so our span is wide.”

Park Circle Cares is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that accepts monetary donations year-round and welcomes additional volunteers, especially during the holiday season.
