I've been eating sardines for a while now. Looking for something a little less fishy. I'm trying these smoked kippers for the first time. Anyone tried these and do you like them?

They’re good, firmer and smokier than sardines but good. I like a squeeze of lemon and a pinch of salt on mine. Hot sauce or capers are nice too

This is by far my favorite canned fish. Eat it everyday over cottage cheese for lunch everyday. Nice and cheap at Walmart also.

Love kippered herring! I can only ever find them in sardine form these days though.

I usually have it with buttered toast, and, if I want a condiment, a light slather of some good mustard.

When I was a kid I lived in the arctic for a few years and an Inuit friend introduced me to them. We would normally eat them straight out of the can back then.

Good stuff! I use these a couple times a week for breakfast and lunch. Fisherman’s eggs and then I put the other half in a bowl and mix with cream cheese for a sandwich.

I prefer kipper snacks over sardines, I think. They’re an easier gateway into tinned seafood.

Polar is a good brand for kippers.

I usually just eat them over pasta or rice with vegetables.

Look for mackerel if you want other options. I find it’s less fishy than sardines too.

    Happy eating!!

Oh my goodness, I just put some lime juice on top of the kippers and then a dab of Kewpie mayo on a triscuit with a touch of hot sauce on top, so delicious!!! Thanks for the recommendations y’all.

This was the second canned fish I tried. Highly recommend very good and low sodium.

They’re a great substitute for bacon in BLTs. Obviously not a direct equivalent but good as a fishy cousin.

Grits topped with kippers and eggs over easy. Don’t forget the buttered toast

One of my favorites, not too salty and not fishy compared to sardines imo. Nice smoky flavor

I also prefer Kipper snacks over sardines. This is a good brand, I have eaten them gladly for years.

Since 2020, in the Pacific Northwest USA, I have seen the price on these rise from $1.79 each to $2.59.

My two favorite ways of eating canned Kippers are:

    1) A KLT sandwich on toast. Kippers, Lettuce, & Tomato

    2) In scrambled eggs. Sauté onions and peppers in some oil, break up the kippers and stir into the onions & peppers u til heated through. Push the mix to the side of the pan, and scramble the eggs, adding more oil if needed.

Polar is my go to brand for kippers. They taste great, readily available at a good price, and less sodium than most kippers.

My go to kippers. Consistent, just the right amount of smoke, very tasty, and at a great price. I buy them by the dozen on Amazon and have them at least once a week. Hope you enjoy.

Those are my official lunch tin on fly fishing trips. I slap them on a saltine. I am not sure how smart that is since I fish areas with A LOT of grizzlies, but they are so good it’s worth the risk!

A little hot sauce and you’re good

Yeah these are great. Cheap, smoky, straight forward. Excellent snack on crackers

This is the best brand, they have the lowest salt and best flavor of any bargain brand

Is anyone else having trouble finding polar smoked salmon? They used to have them at my local Walmart and now it seems I can’t find them anywhere. It was my favorite tin of salmon and it’s gone!

I just find the smoke flavor from polar brand is perfect for me. I don’t know what makes it different than other brands but for their kippers, sardines, salmon, polar is my favorite.
