Hello, coffee friends!
I posted two weeks ago that I got my Nespresso Up in the mail. I've used it at least twice a day for the past two weeks.
Before this, I used a Vertuo Plus for over a year.
My main desires for wanting to upgrade were the faster heat up time, temperature controls, and being able to change brew settings. I also wanted to be able to fit a larger travel mug without having to move the drip tray.
The Up did meet all of those expectations. I also think the machine looks very nice. It holds more water than my Plus did as well. My tall Owala smooth sip fits with a little room to spare.
However, as I'm sure you could surmise from the images on this post, the discard bin makes a big mess.
In my Vertuo Plus, the worst thing to ever happen with the discard bin is that it would be full and the next discarding pod might get stuck until you clear it. Easy. It sometimes had dried grounds in the back part but, for me, there was never pooled liquid.
The Up discard bin is a nightmare. It's ALWAYS full of coffee. It needs to be drained and cleaned every time you empty it. Multiple pieces. And, while the discard bin is pulled out, liquid drips into the spot where the bin slides in. Another thing to clean.
I'm really bummed because I do like the other features. I'm not someone who needs an app but I love being able to set it to descale from an app instead of trying to remember the right button combos to trigger it like on the Plus.
Overall, if you're looking to upgrade, I'd really weigh the benefits against the cleaning inconvenience. I drink at least two pods a day, so it fills up quickly. It's a little better if I fold up some paper towels in there to soak up the liquid, but still not ideal.

That looks really annoying and I would be lining that bin with a sandwich baggie lol
Thank you for sharing!
Quick tip: get a big sponge, trim it down to size, and place it in the tray. It keeps the pods from splashing coffee around and will absorb any that spills out. I got one step further and place a small thin one in the lower tray too in case of any residual liquid that makes it down there.
I’ve had my UP since release day and this has really helped keep it cleaner. There will still be some small mess but nothing like it is without the sponges.
Hope this helps!
If you’ve just gotten it, I would call customer service and let them exchange it b
Huh, interesting. The UP makes a ton more holes on the foil of the pods than other models.
OP beat me to it. I had lots of photos of this issue. I started using the sponge today and it seems to be working. I started out with a bone dry sponge. I will have one or two on standby. Just switch between them. It’s a small annoyance compared to the positives with this machine. I love the little to no coffee grounds in cup.
I ended up returning my up. I was so hopeful but it wasn’t quite right for me. I love and will stick with my plus. 😊
This looks like my original line waste bin, I never have that problem with the vertuo creatista and though it was because of the centrifuge mechanism, but maybe it’s because of having the capsules Vertical vs Horizontal?
Thanks for sharing your experience with the VL Up machine. The capsule discard setup seems similar to the OL machines and thus requires a clean up after each use. I keep a small espresso cup at the ready to catch a drippings after I remove the capsule drawer. And I make sure to wipe out the inside when the container is removed. The setup is slightly different for my OL Lattissima+ as it has two separate sections for the used capsules and the drip tray. For the VL setup, I love having a separate used capsule container from the drip tray. For reference I’ve got the Roundhead model for the VL.
I appreciate you sharing your experience. I’ve been eyeing get the Up .. not a user yet so it would be my first nespresso actually
The smell must be so bad
Im 2 weeks into the Up as well. I just rinse the pieces during the day, not bad at all. For me, the fast heat up time is #1, I get easily distracted, so waiting 30 seconds and then remember to hit go before it auto shuts off, is a fail at least 2 or more times before im able to finally make a cup. Being able to choose/save a shorter pour, and/or a stronger pour for over ice, is awesome.
+ Its very press and play. Looks nice. Is modern. Fast. (I come from an Essenzia Mini). Short pour. Iced drink strength.
– I guess the tray.
How in the world do they QA that and say… Yup good to go.
PS don’t think we’d consider it but would you mind sharing height of travel mug you fit without moving drip tray? I thought specs read like larger mugs wouldn’t fit which was negative for me.
Oh wow! I was thinking about one of those…
It’s crazy how I just bought a Pop+ in the fall and they came out with this that does everything I assumed the Pop+ would do like increasing the temperature and doing ice coffees (not even sure if it doesn’t dispense hot water for ice coffee or not honestly).
I have the same problem with my Essenza machine. So annoying to have to clean it every day. Otherwise as an OL machine, it’s perfect for me
I was part of a months long in home user study for this machine from Aug-Oct this year. One of my biggest complaints was the drip tray and how awkward and messy it was.
I had the same experience and returned mine. They did not credit me or even send an acknowledgement email that they received it, and after ~45 minutes of talking with a customer service agent who was unknowledgeable at best, I disputed the charge. And the next time I opened the app to place a capsule order, they had BANNED MY ACCOUNT.
Why are the pods so wet? I just purchased my first Nespresso Vertuo (the Breville roundhead model) less than a week ago and have used it daily. The pod container is dry, none of the pods are dripping at all. I’m wondering if the centrifuge on the Nespresso Up is a little slower and causes the pods to hold on to more water, leading to the issue you’re experiencing.
Thanks for posting this!
Such an obvious design defect. Why would Nespresso do this? The main feature of the Vertuo line is CONVENIENCE. A daily clean-up is the opposite of convenience.
I have to wonder how long an Up will last before developing further problems.
When my Plus Deluxe finally wears out, I am going back to paper filters and pour-over by hand. Vertuo is dead to me.

I always dump the whole thing into the sink, pods and all. I let the pods dry out, rinse the container and pop it back in.
