Christmas dinner is one of, if not the number one best meal of the year, and pigs in blankets are an essential element for many people. The little sausages wrapped in bacon often cause fights at the dinner table as everyone scrambles to get the last one.

But one food expert has come up with a tasty-looking alternative, which takes just 13 minutes to cook in the air fryer. Nathan Anthony, who posts as Bored of Lunch on TikTok, where he has 1.3 million followers, regularly provides recipes for making meals in the air fryer and ‘fakeaway’ ideas. He recently posted a recipe for air fryer honey and mustard halloumi in blankets.

Opening the video, Nathan said: “Forget about pigs in blankets, this is air fryer halloumi in blankets with honey and mustard. If you cook these at Christmas I guarantee these will be one of the first things to go.”

He added: “Honestly, these are insane. Enjoy!”

How to make air fryer honey and mustard halloumi in blankets

Ingredients:

2 blocks of halloumi16 rashers smoked streaky bacon1-2 tbsp wholegrain mustard4 tbsp honey

Method:

Slice each block of halloumi into four pieces, then halve each one to give you eight sticks per block.Wrap each halloumi stick in a rasher of bacon and air fry at 190 degrees for eight minutes. Turn after five minutes. While that’s cooking, mix the mustard and honey together to make your glaze. After eight minutes, brush the glaze over the halloumi and cook for another five minutes, until sticky and golden.

In the video description Nathan said: “I could eat halloumi every day, [in] any way, and never get bored.” He added: “Serve and enjoy they’ll become your new obsession!”

Many TikTok users were amazed by the recipe. One said: “Will definitely try these.” Another wrote: “Not sure about mustard and honey but halloumi and bacon’s got my heart.”

But others raised questions. One said: “The thing with halloumi, which is delicious, it is so salty already and with the bacon, not sure.” Replying to this, another user said: “Agree. I’m trying this with paneer, its less salty cousin. Will report back.” They added later: “It worked very well!”

Someone else wrote: “These look amazing – but potentially very salty. I’m hoping if I soak the halloumi for long enough it will work out.”

Another said: “Perfect, I have been looking for something for the vegetarians.” But another pointed out an obvious problem with this, saying: “Ah yes, nothing vegetarians love more than vegetarian things wrapped in bacon and air fried.”
