At first I cringed. But then I looked at the experienced hands unmolding it, and I remembered my grandmother, my mother, and now at 53, I begin to see my own hands.
It’s still shitty food, don’t get me wrong. But you look for it every Christmas, and one sad year, you’ll either miss it terribly—or someone else will take up the cottage cheese fish tradition, so as not to disappoint at Christmas, and your children will take their own photos and roll their eyes—and memorize the recipe.
