I trust I don’t need to introduce anyone here to Howlin’ Rays but for the uninitiated: https://howlinrays.com/

In all the times that I’ve been here, I’ve never tried the “Luis Style Sando” which is named after one of the employees and it is their fried chicken sandwich which replacea the bun with thick slices of toast and cheddar cheese. I figured I might as well try something new.

One thing off the bat: I realized that I don’t love cheese on my fried chicken sandwich. That’s on me, not the business. Despite that, the Luis was still really good.

If you have been to HR you already know that they have their fried chicken recipe down to this amazing science with the perfect balance of crunchy exterior and juicy interior. Add in the acidity from the pickles and slaw and in general every bite is full of texture and flavor. But now, you get to add in the crunch from the toast as well so there’s this whole extra layer to enjoy. Was it a game changer? No. But it was a nice change of pace and maybe in the future, I would order the Luis style and just asked them to leave the cheese off if I want to enjoy that toasted bread experience again. 8.5/10

I also decided to go decadent, for me at least, and get a side of fries. The crinkle cut fries here are really good: crunchy, well seasoned. My main nitpick and I might’ve said this the last time I wrote about going to HR: if you are dining in, I really wish they had ketchup bottles at the tables because having to squeeze out ketchup from half a dozen plus of those little packets feels both wasteful and annoying. Like, just get a squeeze bottle and put some ketchup in there and leave them out on the tables or at least at the front counter. 8/10
