HOUGHTON, Mich. (WLUC) – Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly, along with St. Ignatius Church, provided Houghton area seniors with a festive meal on Christmas.

The goal was not only to provide a festive celebration, but to help combat loneliness this season.

The event, which has been going on for more than forty years, is a chance for new and old friends to meet and stay connected with one another.

Little Brothers Dining Area Lead Julie Beck said when the event started, it was easier to feel isolated without modern technology. Little Brothers started it so friends and family who could not see each other for months, and even years, could see each other face to face.

Traditional Christmas food like turkey and stuffing were provided, along with cookies and cupcakes for dessert. Beck said everyone should be able to leave with a full stomach.

However, the food, in Beck’s opinion, is not the important part.

“The holiday meals are really important, and they’re really big, but they’re about joining friends together,” she said.

Beck said if you or someone you know is experiencing loneliness, feel free to join Little Brothers, as they are always happy to accept new members.
