Hi everyone,
I got this wine bottle pourer/spout (see photo) as a gift for Christmas (part of the kit behind) and I don’t really understand its real purpose.
I’ve seen online that it might act as a kind of aerator, but I’m not sure:
Is it meant to aerate the wine while pouring?
Is it useful only for certain types of wine (young wines vs older wines)?
Is it more of a serving convenience thing, or does it actually improve the wine?
Are there specific situations where people really recommend using it?
I’m not very knowledgeable about wine, so I’m genuinely curious if this is something wine drinkers actually use regularly, or if it’s more of a gimmick.
Thanks in advance for your insights!

aeration. no breathing. don’t give a fuc* if i cut my foil bleeding.
I think it’s to allow more aeration when pouring but really reduce the dribble and spill from pouring. Harder to get wine lines running down the side of the bottle with one of those on
Is it not just a wine stopper?
We use something similar in our tasting room. It just makes it so we aren’t dripping all over the place, and it keeps the wine covered so fruit flies don’t get in.
Not used for anything, its kitchen clutter that you will have around for a few years until you decide to throw it out, just like everything else in that gimmick set 🙂
Why would people waste money on such stuff when they can get you a nice pulltex corkscrew instead which will last for a lifetime, and is actually useful, is beyond me.
It’s just to help prevent drips, with a side of looking fancy.
Ones that aerate will have holes on one side, just above where it goes into the bottle and will make a ducking sound and create lots of bubbles in the glass as you pour.
See Trudeau Aroma wine aerator as an example.
Allowing outside air to incorporate into heavier wines to open up their flavor
I think it’s more for ventilation.
So wine does not drip down bottle.
Para que al servir no gotee.
Just a pourer that prevents drips.
Snow bumps
It’s a pogo stick, JFC
It makes pouring easier. I use the same thing for just avoiding those little drops that often fall down the side of the bottle that a skilled somm will wipe off with a serviette.
I’m not skilled so this thing serves my purpose
It’s more to pour without spillage
Also gives more control if you want a pour a precise amount of
Its called a drop stop
Not exactly sure what he inventor intended but I can tell use how/why I use it. When I pour wine directly out of the bottle and into the glass I invariably get a drop or two running down the bottle…easy to wipe with cloth/hand so not life threatening. That said, when I insert that tip device, I get no drips at all…no runs, no drips, no errors.😎
It’s a drip-stop stopper.
Really only used at wine tastings to facilitate fast drip-free pouring of samples
