Caraway Nonstick Ceramic Cookware Set

Amazon

One of our favorite non-toxic cookware sets, Caraway’s pots and pans feature a heavy-duty nonstick coating that’s free of PFOA and PFAS and is far more durable than Teflon. This cookware can handle temperatures up to 550°F, making it one of the most stable nonstick options available.

Breville Barista Express Espresso Machine

Amazon

If you’re hooked on the convenience of a pod-based coffee machine but hate the plastic waste, you can upgrade to this automatic wonder. The Barista Touch Impress Express is a fantastic espresso machine thanks to its automatic but customizable operation: You can simply dump coffee beans in the top and push a button, or you can manually adjust every step to get an absolutely perfect cup.

Hudson Essentials Stainless Steel Measuring Cup Set

Amazon

One of the easiest plastic items to banish from your kitchen is measuring cups. There are lots of inexpensive and long-lasting options available. These stainless steel cups are dishwasher-safe and nest together to save space. Add on a set of glass measuring cups for liquids and you’ll be set on accurate ingredient amounts for years to come.

Carote 10-Piece Silicone Cooking Utensils Set

Walmart

Standard plastic kitchen tools — especially black plastic ones — aren’t very heat-resistant and can be made with seriously toxic chemicals like flame retardants. But metal tools are apt to scratch cookware and mixing bowls. The solution? Silicone kitchen tools, of course. This set is one of our favorites, with soft yet heat-resistant versions of everything you need.

Rubbermaid Brilliance Glass Food Storage Containers, Set of 6

Amazon

Switching from plastic to glass for food storage won’t just reduce your exposure to microplastics; it’ll also give you a more versatile set of containers. Rubbermaid’s Brilliance Glass line is oven-safe up to 450°F, so you can cook, serve, and reheat all in the same container. This all-purpose assortment is a few bucks off, but there are lots of other sets available, including a pair of extra-large containers.

Misen 5-Ply Stainless Steel Frying Pan

Amazon

For high-heat cooking with basically no temperature limits, a stainless steel skillet is the way to go. Misen’s model is a tested favorite for its shape, with outward-sloping sides that make it easy to access the full contents of the pan, as well as the subtle grooves in the surface that help avoid sticking without sacrificing sear performance. (If you’re interested in trying Misen’s new, editor-loved carbon steel nonstick pan, that’s on sale, too.)

John Boos R-Board Maple Cutting Board

Amazon

I finally made the switch from plastic to wooden cutting boards a few years ago, and I can attest that once you do, you’ll never go back. A wooden cutting board will not only eliminate microplastics from your diet but also keep your knives in better condition: The soft surface doesn’t scratch and chip blades like plastic can. This luxurious board from John Boos is our very favorite. (Other Boos cutting boards are on sale after Christmas, too, including the cheaper maple Chop-N-Slice for less than $40.)

Cuisinart Enameled Cast Iron Covered Casserole Dish

Amazon

Enameled cast iron is an excellent replacement for Teflon-based nonstick cookware, especially for hefty items like Dutch ovens where the ability to hold onto heat is an advantage. These indispensable pots get expensive, but Cuisinart’s version was already a great value before its price dropped by another 44 percent.

BrüMate Era 40-Ounce Tumbler

Amazon

With a stainless steel interior and straw, BrüMate’s tumbler ensures your water, soda, or iced coffee doesn’t contact any plastics or nonstick materials. (As a side benefit, the metal straw keeps liquids extra-cold as you sip.) It fits in a cupholder, comes in 20 colors, and holds a massive 40 ounces for maximum hydration.

Lodge 10.25-Inch Cast Iron Skillet

Amazon

Every kitchen needs a cast iron skillet, and that’s entirely separate from the fact that it’s a made of a completely nontoxic (and nearly indestructible) material. Lodge is the best-known name in cast iron for a reason, and its basic model is a perennial fave in our tests.

Souper Cubes Silicone Freezer Molds

Amazon

They look like regular ice cube trays, but these BPA-free silicone containers are made for meal prep. They come in sizes from 2 tablespoons to 2 cups to store everything from full servings of soups and stews to individual portions of chopped garlic, fresh herbs, or pesto. The best part about Souper Cubes is that they can handle temperatures up to 415°F, so you can put them in the oven or a pan of simmering water to defrost and reheat.

LifeStraw Glass Water Filter Pitcher

Amazon

LifeStraw’s game-changing water filter technology can remove heavy metals, microplastics, PFAS, and even parasites. And once the water’s clean, it doesn’t come into contact with any plastic in LifeStraw’s sleek glass pitcher. We love this model’s precise spout in addition to its nontoxic  materials.

Matfer Bourgeat Black Carbon Steel Frying Pan

Amazon

If you take a peek inside a restaurant kitchen, you’ll probably find lots of carbon steel pans. The material is better at high-temperature searing and caramelizing than stainless steel but a little lighter and easier to care for than cast iron. Our favorite carbon steel pan comes from Matfer Bourgeat, a chef-favorite brand that deserves more recognition among home cooks.

Jexcull Snap Ball Tea Strainers

Amazon

It’s time to move on from tea bags: They’re wasteful and often full of microplastics, and there’s a far wider selection of loose-leaf tea available. A simple steel strainer is all you need, and this hinged design lets you scoop up tea directly from the container, drop it in a mug for steeping, and dump it out in the compost bin when you’re done.
