JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – Two local business owners teamed up to offer hundreds of meals to those in need on Christmas Day.

Legendary Barbecue owner C.J. White decided to offer free food to folks at Pittman Park in Jackson today.

He also called the owner of Jerk City Grille and asked if he wanted to do the same thing.

The two trucks served smoked chicken, jerk dressing, and other sides to dozens of folks today.

White said his truck ran out of food in less than an hour after giving away more than 100 plates to the city’s unhoused.

“God blessed me to be able to do something that I love. I just wanted to make sure I was able to give back to the community. And my son, my wife, and my daughter, as well as my sister, that’s how we’ve been raised. My mom used to bring us out. We used to have to help on holidays to donate and give our time on holidays. So, I just wanted to come back and do the same thing,” White said.

Wendell Brewster, owner of Jerk City Grille, said his motivation came from his upbringing and personal experience.

“You know, I came from nothing, so we’ve been blessed. And my mother always told me: to be blessed, you’ve got to be a blessing. You’re going to have to bless others in order for you to be blessed yourself. So, you know, our cup runneth over sometimes, so we can take that and pour it into others,” Brewster said.

Other groups offered toiletries, backpacks, and other necessities to those partaking in today’s free meal.
