my mother's way is bit different. first olive oil and going to sauté the onions. after add sauté the diced potatoes and carrots. Then you add the washed red lentils, sauté them briefly, add hot water, and let them boil and cook. Once everything is thoroughly cooked, you blend it. In a separate pan, sauté the dried mint in butter. Then add it to the pan. Finally, add black pepper and salt and mix. This recipe is more better believe me. İf you want more smooth texture you can filter it with strainer
In my own version, I don't cut the onion, just drop it as a whole (because I don't like the taste in the soup) and add 1 carrot instead. At the end of the cooking process I remove the onion and blend the rest of the soup.
Some people like it with potatoes but honestly lentils and potatoes together are hard for the stomach.
This will be bland. You have to add some kind of broth most commonly chicken. Except some of the yoğurt based soups almost all Turkish soups are made of broth, it is a core component. Western soups can alliviate the lack flavor with the use of cream. But there is no option for that in traditional soups in Turkey. Our soups are generally light so they would be flavorless with just water without broth.
