Fresh bowls of hummus, Lebanese-style chicken and warm pitta breads are among the dishes that could be coming to Nottingham city centre.
The family behind the Middle Eastern-inspired ZHUG restaurant in Wollaton are planning to open a new site on Broad Street in Hockley.
Suda Sharma opened the 45-seater Mediterranean restaurant in 2022 and in the years since, it has become one of the leafy suburb’s most popular spots.
Now, Ms Sharma has applied to Nottingham City Council for licensing permission to open a new ZHUG restaurant on 15 Broad Street.
The prominent two-storey building has sat empty for some time, with former occupants Italian restaurant Botti Di Mamma believed to have closed in 2023.
In planning documents sent to the council, Ms Sharma says the new eatery “will focus on Mediterranean street food, with alcohol and entertainment being ancillary to the main restaurant function”.
Seeking permission to open the new restaurant between 8am to 2.30am every day, the document states “no consumption of food or drink will take place in the external seating area after 11pm,” with a focus on “late-night refreshment”.
Street food gyros from Greece, halloumi from Cyprus and Lebanese-style chicken are among the dishes prepared in ZHUG’s open kitchen.
With dishes described as “mouth-watering” on the restaurant’s website, diners previously told Nottinghamshire Live in 2022 that ZHUG was one of the county’s most underrated food spots.
