This past holiday week, Midland’s Open Door provided a special Christmas meal to the community through its soup kitchen to celebrate the season of hope.
On Thursday, Dec. 25, the Open Door soup kitchen served a spin on a traditional Christmas meal: roasted pork loin on a bed of apple dressing, whipped redskin mashed potatoes with brown gravy, peppered corn, sautéed green beans, warm rolls with butter, tossed salad, relish tray, and a special Christmas dessert.
The meal was prepared and served by volunteers from the Midland community who spent their Christmas Day serving their neighbors in need.
In addition, guests at the men’s crisis shelter and the women and children’s crisis center enjoyed a delicious pizza dinner on Christmas Eve donated by Pizza Sam’s and delivered by members of the Zonta Club of Midland.
Over the past week, several other local establishments stepped up to celebrate the holidays with the Open Door by hosting drives and dropping off donations, including Calvary Baptist Academy, Glo Medical Spa, Garber Chevrolet of Midland and Costco.
“At Christmas, God entered our brokenness to rescue us from all that keeps us from true joy and peace,” Executive Director Saralyn Temple said. “Because He has done this for us, we seek—on a much smaller scale—to do the same for others. We are deeply grateful for the incredible friends in our community who serve alongside us, bringing hope to the homeless, hungry, and hurting throughout Midland County.”
During the holidays, which is often a time of intensified loneliness, Open Door provides not only hot meals, but an opportunity for community and conversation for those who feel alone. For more information, including a tour and volunteering opportunities in 2026, call the office at 989-835-2291.
