finally tried akahoshi ramen tonight and it was wildly good! i went in with moderate expectations – i knew it would be good, but i truly didn’t think it’d blow me away. i was wrong, i was so impressed! the first sip of the broth was so pleasantly surprising, extremely umami-forward, and had such a depth of flavor. the noodles were thin and bouncy, and really pleasant to chew on. the egg (which you have to order as an addition) was perfectly jammy and marinated to perfection. and the pork belly had to be my second favorite element of the bowl (second to the broth of course) as it was extremely tender and the extra caramelization from the torching they do really brings out the sweet, porky goodness. i appreciate how small the menu is, because you can really taste how they take extra time and care to make sure every element for each bowl is perfect. while we were midway through our bowls, my fiancé said he already can’t wait to come back and eat this again, and that really sums up our experience. very excited to return and have the akahoshi miso again and hopefully a monthly special!

I was reading their website: “Please note, all checks will include a 20% service charge in lieu of a tip. Tipping is not required nor expected.”

So what does that mean? Tipping is not required, but they charge you for a tip anyway? [See edit below, not a tip, but a service fee.] Pretty ballsy that restaurants are adding this type of service charge.

**Edit:** I’m not sure what is with the downvotes. If a restaurant charges automatic gratuity, then it is considered a service charge — **and not a tip**. What is the difference? Whereas tipping is optional, you have to pay a service fee. Also, because this is a service fee, there is no guarantee the money is going to your waitstaff. The restaurant can do whatever it wants with those fees.

I personally do not like these “junk fees” because they are sneaky ways of raising the price of the food. Customers often don’t know about the fees until they get the bill. People should be questioning and pushing back on these fees — not downvoting me on Reddit.

I feel like the biggest contrarian because everyone raves about it while I thought it was alright but not worth the $20.

  4. gonna try akahoshi ramen next tuesday i can’t wait! what was the cost of the miso ramen with the egg?

  5. It’s so good. I pick my wife up at the train at 5:30 and I find myself there for an in and out 10/10 bowl at open time.

  6. Have you tried Musashiya Ramen? They have a “build your own ramen” set up and it’s pretty spectacular 🤤.

To each their own, but this was very overrated imo. Broth was so salty that I didn’t really get the flavor that everyone is crazy about. Maybe worth a second try, but Oiistar has never failed me (black garlic shoyumen with suicide paste or bust)

One of my favorite ramen bowls in the city. The spicy powder you can get as an add-on is a nice touch.

Not as wide of a broth selection as some other places, but they do what they do well.

Their ramen was even better than some I’ve had in Tokyo. Incredible spot!

I just ate here for the first time – my brothless ramen was tasty and fine, but my kids thought the namesake miso ramen was meh and wife felt the special lobster ramen was way too salty. We have ate a lot of ramen including in sapporo. However the place was packed so people must love the food there.

  11. So good right? One of the best bowls of ramen I’ve had outside of Japan

Very overrated place. It’s like saying Panda express is the best Chinese food

Strings is the most similar to the ramen I had when I was in Tokyo, and they’re the cheapest bowl I’ve found in the city so far. The rest of the shops people are listing are doing some gourmet shit in their bowls, replacing the chashu with whole chunks of pork belly instead, and that’s messing with the price.
