I have an old portable BBQ which was gifted to me a few years ago. The manual is lost so I can't figure out exactly.
What is this second piece used for?
Apparently it is called a 'deflector' and is removable.

Finally going to put it to use for new year's dinner!

I suppose if you wanted to cook something with semi-indirect heat on your bbq you’d use this to dissipate the heat from charcoal under your food.

It is a heat deflector/diffuser and used so you don’t have direct heat on your food. These are common on a Kamado BBQ for smoking.

Reminds me of a grill plate from a Korean barbecue restaurant.
