Opus One 2018, one ounce sampling in an unexpected setting… A Cincinnati butcher shop, poured from a dispenser beneath a stuffed buck while customers ordered their New Year’s Eve meats at the counter.
At $34 for a one ounce pour, it was absolutely a rip off. Price aside, sharing this unconventional moment with my father in law in made the whole thing worth it. Equal parts fine wine and comedy while we waited for our tenderloin order to be prepared.
In the glass: dry, dark fruit forward, mild tannins, with a slightly chalky texture. Certainly not the tasting room the Rothschilds had in mind, but definitely unforgettable.

This place sounds pretty cool.
I’ve never had opus but the fact a butcher shop has it by the glass is pretty cool
Sometimes you just gotta do it for the story. Good choice.
Is it a rip off? Seems fairly on par with restaurant prices. I see opus for around 650-700, so about a 150$ markup here… but you are getting it by the 0z, im sure you would get it for less for bottle price. But maybe im crazy, butcher shop convenience price seems ok.
Very cool, mind sharing the name of the butcher?
Fun! I’ve been having fun with the proliferation of wine stations. K&L had a 98 lafite Rothschild in theirs a few months ago. Probably a wine I’d never get to try if not for that.
Wow! Don’t sleep on pride merlot. It will make you wonder why you don’t drink Merlot.
No health or fire violations there LOL
Where is this in cincy
This sounds like an awesome experience, I dig it! I admit that I might cringe at paying that much for an amazing wine, only to receive it with someone’s finger and palm-print all over my glass lol. But maybe it’s just me.
I’m not far from Cincinnati I need details
lol they have the Scout Guide on display … the symbol of bougie published in Charlottesville VA. All checks out.
I’d try it for that price. Haven’t had it yet. Wasted way more on Caymus Special Selection bottle that was meh . Missed the good years but worth knowing what I’m not missing.
$204 per glass 😂
This is why I love the pour your own setup.
That’s a generous 1oz pour.
According to the tasting room staff at Opus One, Oakville Bench (available at Trader Joe’s) is made of the same grapes.
