Sadly, no. Otherwise they would be called a grilled cheese sandwich, grilled cheese for short. Gots to have bread.

I think this logic applies: If I ask someone to make me a grilled cheese sandwich and they bring me a quesadilla I would be confused and wonder if they heard the original request.
They share similar attributes, but for me, they are two different things.

If it’s not called a grilled cheese then obviously it does not count.

No, they are their own glorious combination of cheese and bread. Because they can contain other things and still be a quesadilla, I believe that excludes them from grilled cheese status.

I always laugh at the term Mexican grilled cheese when these are posted here. Idk how the sub will react. The other posts in the past are mixed. Depends on the purists mood. I say let it stay and let people debate and make jokes and have their fun. Sub can get pretty repetitive when it’s just basic grilled cheeses only, need some chaos to mix it all up sometimes

The way I see it, this is similar the a square is a rectangle, but not all rectangles are squares argument. This is in CONCEPT: a grilled cheese. It has the flat bread (tortilla) and cheese. You won’t go ahead and order a quesadilla as a grilled cheese, but it has the properties of a grilled cheese.

I don’t see any grilled cheese sandwiches in r/fajitas so…
By a court of law, burritos and quesadillas are not sandwiches.

I used to be a nanny of toddler-aged twins. They called both quesadillas and grilled cheese sandwiches “cheese insides.” So by toddler logic, yes, quesadillas count.
When they asked for a cheese inside, though, I never knew if they wanted grilled cheese or quesadilla, and if I made the wrong one, i’d face the wrath of tiny hangry humans who didn’t have enough grasp of language to tell me what the problem was, so i’d just have tantruming toddlers. So by toddler logic, no, quesadillas don’t count.
Don’t worry, though. Eventually I wised up, and when two hungry little girls asked for cheese insides, I would make 2 quesadillas and 2 grilled cheese sandwiches, and the twins would each have one of the one they wanted (which was always the same), and I would have the other. So by adult logic, sometimes I craved one more than the other, but at the same time, either was fine (or better than opinionated toddlers who couldn’t voice their opinions, anyway).

I believe so.
If we admit that a tortilla is bread, then it follows that a quesadilla formed in this manner (*i.e.* two torillas with cheese between) is a grilled cheese.
The only escape I can see from this conclusion is to specify *leavened* bread.

There is cheese and it is being “grilled”. I say it counts.

There’s a “quesadilla is GC” flair so I assume at some point the mods decided quesadillas are allowed

No. They’re quesadillas not grilled cheese. This is not meant for this sub.
