Update: Here's what it looks like after 3, 5×8 trays of pecan pellets. I added a single overlapped snake of B&B briquettes & lit one end, I'm curious if it'll stay lit/chain as intended. I elevated the pellet tray on a burned out steel can to keep it off the coals. My goal is to try and raise the temp just enough so I'm not smoking frozen meat. I think it's looking decent so far! I'll check it in an hour or so to see how it's going.

I have been wondering about how to cold smoke in the egg, this is an interesting approach. I would find comparably sized lumps though

I don’t remember where, but years ago I saw where a guy ducted the chimney of a minimax into the intake of his large egg for cold smoking. I don’t have a spare egg but it’s an idea for those that want cold smoke.

What about just lighting a smoker tube of pellets with a torch?

I have the smoke daddy. It does a good job and would recommend for cold smoking. Very easy to setup.
