New Springettsbury restaurant has mix of American, Mediterranean food

A new restaurant, Venezia Family Restaurant and Cafe, opened its doors last month on East Market Street in Springettsbury Township.

First-time restaurant owners Mourad and Rose Gawargy remodeled the former Thirsty’s Bar and Grill at 2914 E. Market St. and now offers a number of breakfast, lunch and dinner options that include Mediterranean and American fare.

“We would like to serve the community here and meet and talk with people,” Rose Gawargy said.

Venezia offers breakfast daily from 6 to 11 a.m. and lunch and dinner until 8 p.m.

Breakfast offerings include the classics like steak and eggs, eggs with corn beef hash, biscuits and gravy, a variety of omelets, eggs benedict, including a Greek style and one with smoked salmon. There are also french toast, pancakes and waffles,along with a number of breakfast sandwiches.

For lunch, there are a variety of burgers and sandwiches, including a Kofta Sandwich and a Hawawshi pita. Kofta is a Mediterranean dish consisting of ground meat and spices that is formed into balls, patties, or cylinders and cooked. Hawawshi had its origins in Egypt and includes ground beef spiced with onions, pepper, parsley and occasionally chilis.

For dinner, patrons can get chicken, steak or seafood, Italian dishes like fettuccine alfredo with a choice of chicken or shrimp or spaghetti and meatballs. Mediterranean dishes include falafel — which is made from spiced ground chickpeas fried in a ball — and gyro, kofta and chicken kabab plates.

For dessert, Gawargy said, Venezia offers the Greek dessert baklava and Dubai chocolate cake.

“The dessert section is very unique,” she said.
