The Duluth Housing and Redevelopment Authority is halting plans for the redevelopment of the Garfield Avenue area due to the impending construction of the Duluth-Superior high bridge. The authority was planning to acquire 92 parcels of residential property and redevelop them for industrial use.

For the first time ever, the Duluth City Council elected a woman as its president. By a 5-4 split in secret balloting, Elnora Johnson was chosen to succeed Clifford M. Olson. The council also elected Maureen Bye as vice president.

Michelina’s Inc., the frozen-food business owned by Jeno Paulucci, is closing its Duluth plant and moving those production operations to Lakeville, Minnesota. The plant employs 61 workers in Duluth, most of whom will be laid off.
