Just significantly upgraded my espresso setup, which as you can imagine has been kinda expensive.
Not quite ready to splash out on a WDT tool yet, so decided to just make my own.

Anything I should change with it? surely it can't be THAT different to a £20 version…

You could get some acupuncture needles to use instead and arrange so they point slightly outward

Those needles or whatever are too thick. Maybe use one if you don’t have anything thinner. Typically, needles that are 0.3-0.4mm thick are best.

You can get a WDT tool on AliExpress for £1

Your needles are really too big sorry to say

EDIT – too big needles will encourage channelling and therefore an uneven shot. 0.2-0.3 mm is sweet spot.

Have tariffs pushed people to this? They’re a couple bucks on aliX.

  5. No one is explaining that the needles are too thick BECAUSE thick needles ***will actually do a worse job than not using anything at all***. Ask me how I know.

Love it. I feel like there should be a thread of janky WDT whisks.

  7. don’t use this shit. it would make more harm than good

Weird place to draw the spending line on the cheapest part of the entire setup

My single toothpick is too thick… it still works in a pinch.

im not a machine owner i have a nespresso i dont own a espresso machine but i enjoy watching vidoes. can anyone explain to me spending alot on tools like wdt tools or tampers. iv seen some weird gear mechanism based wdt tools. i dont get it so can anyone help explain. genuinely asking

  11. Like others have said you need thinner needles. Acupuncture needles work well. I had one with needles not even as thick as yours and it was worse than not having it at all

If you are in the US, I am happy to mail you acupuncture needles for free.

I use chopped up guitar strings in a cork and it works swell

I used to use an opened black hair pin, yours looks great

  15. This is the ghettoest shit I’ve ever seen on this sub I love it

Your needles are too thick and possibly the wrong material (can’t really tell from here) but you also don’t want to use normal needles like those used for medical or acupuncture purposes because they will damage your basket and they could also be too thin. Investing in a well-tested, dedicated WDT tool with round-tipped needles made from 304 stainless steel is the way to go. They will be the perfect thickness and won’t damage your equipment. Normcore and Breville are two brands I know of that offer excellent WDT tools (I use the Breville 2-in-1).

I thought I was innovating with the acupuncture needle + cork. Apparently, it’s a universal poor home barista’s setup 😂🤘🏻

  18. Haha, exactly what I did. With some eCig Kanthal wire.

Use thin needles like the ones your grandmother uses for sewing 🪡
