Was out fishing half the day, didn't pull any fish up my ice hole, could see canada on the far side of the river through the fog.

Got home and made spaghetti with meat sauce, everything expired January 2023 or earlier.

1 pint home canned Italian sausage, 1 jar Aldi's marinara, 1 can food pantry spaghetti sauce (got from someone who got if at fp then threw it out because it wasn't high quality stuff), angel hair pasta noodles i got on clearence in 2019 at Mennonite store, and opened a thing of Parmesan i bought years ago, and has since turned a dark brown sitting years in my pantry.

It was edible, was hoping for a plate of fried fish with peas and mash potatoes, but didn't catch any.

Tomorrows main ration will be spaghetti again.

That sauce isn’t sticking…… Don’t rinse your pasta.

I’d heard urban legends about parmesan cheese actually being mostly sawdust, but didn’t truly believe until today.

  3. Man, that Parmesan is gonna get ya one of these times

If the sauce was canned you’re fine. Spaghetti doesn’t expire. That cheese on the other hand…

I’ve been following these “ration” posts for a week or two. I like them, but what’s the driving force behind this? Just trying to live frugally? Trying to make a point? Performance art project?

It’s one of those great mysteries in life. Parmesan cheese in a jar always has an expiration date far in advance when I buy it. Then suddenly it seems to be expired not by days but by months in the refrigerator. 🤔

Please I don’t think the cheese can be called cheese anymore at this point please

Dried pasta and canned stuff okay fine but the cheeeeese

I haven’t seen so much pure snow for a long time… That is beautiful.

I still think that using that parmesan, and considering it food, is a crime.

Canada was about 2 miles away, saw a commercial freghter going down the river. Lot of them stuck lately due to ice.

Not gonna lie. Didn’t even read the post, just clicked through the photos. And man, was that a journey and a half.

That parm gave up on being cheese and returned to dust.

You don’t seem the type to take handouts but I live relatively close to Canada (my parents own property that can see it over the river) and I’d be happy to provide you some canned or jarred goods when I get some free time. I also have a shitton of books I was planning to donate if you want any of them.

Feel free to DM me about it. Here’s hoping to you catching some perch, both times I was up north recently my favorite local joint was out of it.

Have you ever heard of the artist James Whistler? Your posts remind me of his art for some reason

They make me feel very peaceful even though you are in a difficult situation. They are beautiful

I’m used to brown cheese (Norwegian), but brown Parmesan is something I’ve never seen or heard of.

  21. I didn’t even know it was possible for grated Parmesan to become that colour.

  22. InterestingKey3385

Genuinely curious, how’d the Parmesan taste?

  23. RaftCityBitch

I had expired spaghetti for my one meal today too! Hell yeah

Would you have cooked the fish if you caught some? Would love to see that. Mad props for your rugged lifestyle & best of luck nice time on the ice.

Before I read the caption, I thought it was cocoa powder on spaghetti

  26. InitialAd2324

Honest question. Why not just *not* use the parm?

  27. mjollnard

Have you tried using that spaghetti and sauce as bait?
