NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — The effort to keep food insecurity in check in continues on into a new year, and it takes a team effort between the community and agencies like the Lowcountry Food Bank.
“River Oaks Middle School in DD2 hosting a mobile food drive,” said Leslie Howard, the school’s Family Engagement and Community Liasson.
Wednesday’s event included efforts by employees of the Dorchester County school and plenty of fresh produce from the food bank.
“I would say this event probably has about seven to eight pounds of fresh food that are going to go out today,” said Dan Higdon with the Lowcountry Food Bank. “The truth is there’s just a big demand for this sort of thing.”
Vehicles formed a long line in the school’s parking lot looking for help to fill a fridge.

Howard says a number of students at River Oaks fall into a low-income category and their families need the help from the community.
“Our main goal is to always provide as much help and resources to our families as possible,” Howard tells us.
According to Higdon, the Lowcountry Food Bank does its best to determine which partners are struggling the most.
“We’re just trying to make sure to kind of spread the wealth evenly, so to speak,” says Higdon.
“These are really challenging times and so we’re kind of trying to fill the gap and provide some healthy, nutritious food for people and families. And kind of help them get through this. And it’s just a tricky time for sure,” says Higdon.

Howard explains the team-up is an important way they tackle hunger.
“A huge partnership and help. We’re so thankful for the support from the Lowcountry Food Bank. We could do this without them,” says Howard.
Coming up on Saturday Jan. 10 there are two local food distributions associated with the LCFB. They are in Summerville at the Cathedral Impact Center from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and in Charleston at Bethel United Methodist Church from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.
