Butter cookies have proved their longevity through generations. We serve them up with afternoon tea, hand out melt-in-your-mouth sweets after dinner, and present them on platters at the potluck. We dress them up for Christmas and batch them for parties.
When it comes to store-bought versions of butter cookies, Pepperidge Farm’s Chessmen have long reigned supreme. (I remember my grandfather eating them straight out of the package.) In the South, we’ve even worked Chessmen into some of our favorite recipes—an elegant swap for Nilla Wafers in banana pudding, for instance. Now, for the first time ever, Chessmen are getting a flavor upgrade.

Pepperidge Farm just announced three new Chessmen flavors are now available, each feeling warm, indulgent, and a bit nostalgic:
Salted Caramel: A caramelized balance of buttery sweetness with a touch of sea saltCinnamon Sugar: A cozy blend of sweet cinnamon and golden sugarBrown Butter Pecan: A subtly sweet toasted pecan flavor with a nutty finish
We imagine these new Chessmen will find their stardom in all kinds of shortbread-related desserts, and the addition of Brown Butter Pecan can only mean good things for Grandma’s favorite layered pudding recipe or a no-bake shortbread pie crust. (If you want to make a version of these Texas-inspired cookies at home, try our Salted Butter-Pecan Shortbread.)

While Pepperidge Farm Chessmen Salted Caramel and Cinnamon Sugar are now available at retailers nationwide, the Brown Butter Pecan flavor is found exclusively at Walmart at around $5.89 per package (24 cookies).
In addition to Chessmen, you may also be a fan of the brand’s timeless Milano Cookies. (Fun fact, these were inspired by a trip to Europe founder Margaret Rudkin took back in the 1950s, and it was because of Southern temperatures melting the chocolate in stores that she decided to sandwich the cookies together.) The newest flavor of Milano, White Chocolate Mango, is also launching nationwide this month.
Invite a friend over for a cup of tea and a taste-test—you won’t want to miss this limited-time shortbread.
