In Medieval Europe, flat round pieces of stale bread known as trenchers were used as plates. At the end of the meal, the used trencher could be eaten with sauce. The used trencher could also be given to the poor to eat.

  3. I always assumed they had higher edges, like a trench or the sub shop that used to pull out the inner bread from the roll.
