I’ve been a thundercloud fan since the late 80s/early 90s. Anyone remember the Wise chips? Anyways, you can get a majority of their large sandwiches for less than $10. My personal favorite is the club but if I’m starving, I’ll pony up for the big Paul. I have tried to like the office favorite but they are way too inconsistent with how neat they make the sandwich. Other than that, delicious lunch at a reasonable price.

  1. A rare sub-$10 lunch option left in Austin…And sometimes they play pretty tasteful metal.

    Pros:

    – Good price.

    – Good selection of subs.

    – Solid meats, veggies, fillings.

    – Relatively healthy for fast food

    – Employees are happier and friendlier than 99% of places (we all know why).

    Cons:

    – Bread is squishy and flavorless.

    – Sloooooooooow (we all know why).

Overall, it’s good for the price point, and I hit them up once a week or so. Turkish delight with cream cheese is way better than the ingredients would lead you to expect.

California club is a favorite of mine AND their prices are still pretty good. I like Jimmy John’s and jersey mikes too but their prices are creeping higher and higher

The Cali club, the Austin club, the NY Italian and the meatball are the best.

  5. AcidFunk3o3

I like the Office Favorite and don’t get anything else, really.

  6. joooshknows

Their hot pastrami is incredible, esp for the price

  7. Western_Grab4579

One of the best lunch/sandwhich values in town.

  8. the_short_viking

That’s interesting that they used to sell Wise chips..

Not liking thundercloud is a marker of a person who doesn’t “get” Austin and I’ll die on that hill. This used to be a city run by and for real slackers, damnit!

  10. nada chicken parm with black olives >>> was my go to after school when i was a student at mccallum.

  11. waldo_the_bird253

they have crazy specials too through the birthday email club. basically always get a bogo sandwich with my wife and kids and it’s waaaaaaaaayy cheaper than anywhere else i can take em.

  12. Nole_in_ATX

I get a side of thunder sauce and dip every sandwich I get in it

  13. genteelbartender

I recommend getting the thunder sauce on the side to prevent soggy bread. Other than that, carry on. This town was built on Thundercloud.

There’s a lot of variance between locations. East Riverside, east of 35=great. East Riverside west of 35= ok, not great, hardly any lettuce

  15. that_baddest_dude

I love how the interior of every one of them looks grungy and nasty. I also love the huge sandwich sign on top of them. I don’t ever want them to change.

    California Club for me.

Doing the Thundercloud to Amy’s combo on Lake Austin was one of my favorite dining experiences as a kid.

  17. I’m not veg but the veggie delight is SUPER fkn good and a fiber bomb

Fresh, Fast and Healthy since 1975. My buddy (RIP) managed the Lavaca St. store for years. I can’t resist the Office Favorite- for those not in the know, it’s tasty Egg Salad with Bacon. Damn good.

  19. deeplovinz

Burnet/anderson location is the best. Their manager is such a cool guy!

  20. murderandpancakes

The faux chicken patty option hits the spot.

I miss when they used to do monthly specials on different sandwiches each month, still can’t complain about that price tho

  22. I love Thundercloud! Sure, there are some better subs around town, but for the price this place cant be beat. The people who work at the hwy 290 location are the sweetest!

  23. Heffenfeffer

Used to hit the South Lamar location when I worked at a kennel that was across the street. None of us were vegetarian but we were all obsessed with the nada chicken sandwich. That was over 15 years ago though, I am afraid to try it now and ruin the nostalgia.

  24. The Community Impact that comes in the mail includes a BOGO free coupon in the back. Every. Month.

  25. Better than Subway and reasonably priced. I go at least once a week. That being said Snarfs, Pot Belly, Ike’s, Jersey Mikes, Home Slice, Little Deli and Tucci’s are all better.

  26. dialabitch

Always remember (I never do) that the Community Impact paper runs a 2 for 1 sandwiches coupon in every issue.

I guess we forgot about all the health code violations

Thundercloud is one of those places that people have said is good for so long that everyone started to believe it. It’s just Austin subway, but with lower quality hygiene and standards. Some of their sandwiches are tasty, but there is nothing remarkable about it. They use pre-cut deli meats and cheese that sit in a tub, not cut fresh to order, bread is not made in house and they sometimes run out altogether because of the way their stores are run and just can’t make sandwiches which is hilarious. Their employees don’t wear gloves/hairnets most of the time. Had an employee come in after smoking a cigarette and make my sandwich and could taste the cigarette in my food, place is nasty(burnet and anderson location next to Conans). If you’re not broke, worth the extra few bucks to get a legitimate sandwich from a real deli.

  29. Zealousideal-Bag-560

Thundercloud is 100% GOATED!! Used to go to the one on Lake Austin blvd when I was in high school now I venture to San Marcos or New Braunfels to get my fix!!!

  30. Thundercloud fucking slaps and I will not accept slander against it.

If you have perceived cons about Thundercloud, you are simply wrong.
