I need grilled cheese at work and only have a meecro wavay (microwave) available. I have one of these things I've been eyeballing but

  1. I grew up in the 90s and had metal in microwave = bad hammered into my skull…

  2. Don't know if there is a better way, please enlighten!?

Thoughts? Experience with? Judgment?

I'm heading to bed soon, I hope your Thursday is delicious 🧀

I’m curious as to the verdict…

I would skip this and buy a panini press. They’re bigger and more versatile.

It comes out alright. Not super crispy though. More on the soft side. And be careful opening it. If you touch that metal bit, it’ll burn like hades.

We had one when I was a kid back in the 90s. Wouldn’t say it’s absolutely the best but that fucker was the SHIT when I was a kid. Used it all the time.

I used to have one but it was more like a waffle iron kinda deal

It made fantastic grilled cheeses but it kinda sucked to clean afterwards

Can you imagine the mess if you actually used it on the sandwich in the image?

I was the same way until recently. As it turns out, the issue isn’t with metal just physically being present, after all microwave sides are normally metal.

The problem is that the waves themselves bounce off metal, and if they’re just endlessly bouncing then it creates a crackling ball of energy. If you have food or plastic or whatever inside to absorb the waves, there’s no need to worry.

And the specific problem with spoons sticking out of your food is that they’re normally closer to the microwave emitter and tend to reflect them around before they get to the food. It’s one of those things where it’s *probably* fine 9/10 times but you don’t want to see that 1 in 10 (I’m not a scientist, this may be inaccurate. It’s just what I was told)

No, I like to use a cast iron on the stove top. Gets it extra crispy and hot
