I have been dosing 1g off whole my espresso journey
I just got this m1 class certificated 200g precision weight and ofcourse I had to check the accuracy of my scale. Noticed that the scale measures incorrectly exactly 1g!!!
Is this why my espresso has been tasting off??
What kind of equipment I should buy to correct my mistakes?
Can I trust my scale anymore?

Try taring your scale, then adding the weight.
No, this is not why your espresso has been tasting off. Its tasting off because you haven’t properly adjusted your recipe /because/ it was tasting off
I think you need a 500 dollar la marzocco acacia scale, anything cheaper and you may as well wring your sweaty socks out and drink that.
*scrolls back up to see what sub this is.
Most scales can be recalibrated right?
Have you tried grinding finer?
Learn to dose by volume instead of weight 😁
Isn’t it mostly about ratios? Aren’t you measuring both with the same scale?
It might be 0.5% off, not 1g off.
If it’s off during beans weighing it will also be off when weighing the liquid. Worst case it’s off by 1g all the time, then you’re dosing 17 in, 35 out instead of 18:36. I doubt even the Hoff will be able to tell that difference in taste. If it’s off 0.5% (1g on 200g) then not even a lab will be able to tell the difference.
If however you need an excuse to spend more and upgrade everything then yes, this is why your espresso has been off.
have you tried different weight? try 100 or 50g? why i have the feeling the inaccuracies are not constantly 1g.. probably less with lesser weight .. so 18g of coffee won’t show 19g.. probably 18.1g so I think you’re good
Eh, it’s all relative in regards to weight. If your scale is consistent you use it to determine the amount of a particular bean needed to get the volume needed to properly fill your basket.
Outjerked once again
It’s 0.1g off by percentage. Just kick the decimal one spot to the left. You’re ok.
Grind finer, should fix itself

You have brought shame and dishonor to this group.
You’re not serious, are you?
Scales aren’t magic! They’re mechanical devices that require calibration. This is why you have a set of calibration weights: to check the veracity of your scale.
Yes, still trust your scale. Now you know it’s off by 1 g at 200 g. If you have a full set of weights, you can figure out how much it’s off across a range.
If your scale allows you to adjust its calibration, you can fix this. Otherwise just do it mentally.
This has nothing to do with why your shots don’t taste good. Whatever else a mechanical problem is, it’s consistent.
So your 200 grams espresso shots are really 199 grams instead? Hmm yeah that will screw up your shots for sure.
An 0.5% accuracy delta won’t make a difference. Skill issue 🙁
We don’t create recipes based on numbers first.
Recipes are created based on taste. The numbers are used to recreate it.
So it doesn’t matter if the scale is calibrated. As long as it is consistent
I would doubt that it’s anywhere near a full gram off when you are weighing a typical dose. Probably a tenth of a gram at most.
1g error in 200g would be 0,09g for your 18g dose, just a rounding error as you have a maximum of 0.1g accuracy.
with your logic your zero would show 1g which doesn’t make any sense, as you zero the scale when you start measuring.
So, if your scale is off by 1 g at 200 g, that means it‘s off by 0.5%. Therefore, if you want to weigh 18 g of beans, you will be out by 0.09 g. I don’t think 18.09 g instead of 18 g makes much difference. Everything’s fine. 👍
How are you using M1 calibration weights, everyone knows espresso requires E1 class certified calibration weights.
(Shamefully admits I have a 1KG M1 weight too as I could not justify spending 395 euro for an E1 weight 🙂 )
Assuming that error is linear (most likely non-linear), it’s off by 0.5% which is less than 0.2 grams for your 36 gram shot. It’s more likely that error is non-linear meaning your 36 gram shot is probably very close to actually 36 grams. Even less if you are weighing out 18g of beans for your dose. So like others have said, I would look elsewhere for why your shot sucks.
I can never tell anymore which posts in this sub are serious and which aren’t.
it’s probably consistently off, so perhaps not a problem actually. if it was erratic, that would change things.
Plus, scales like flat surfaces, not ideal to measure accuracy like that, put it on a stable hard flat surfaces, no perforated mesh under it either
