Today I had a really simple snack/ lunch so ran my meal through an AI app someone asked me to try here as I wanted to see how close it would get. Honestly the results were worse than I expected.
Using the food packaging, scales and MFP I calculated 236 calories. The AI came out at 450! That’s almost double.
I know most on here hate the AI apps anyway but I’m hoping this will show those who still think they’re good just how inaccurate and therefore useless they are.

those calories from label look slightly low to me (and they can be off), this ai estimate looks maybe little to high, id say it’s somewhere in between these two
depends also on the calorie estimator
i made myself an app and i tens to make photo of a label if can and then adjust in terms of mistake. and typically photo is not enough, because the more context the better
even id you put something that can give ai context what’s the size is could help to increase accuracy
eg fork could be such visual machine even
AI apps cannot measure size of food, that’s the major issue in all of them. Currently all AI apps work like this:
1. Analysis what kind of food in your photo.
2. count how many of them.
3. Look up food database and sum calorie
So there is NO size of food at all. In another words, there is only one standard pizza size, may be you only eat tiny pizza but actually result still count from standard size.
