This bottle opened up magnificently. At my first sips, it was a thinnish dark plum and cherry with a hint of raspberry, some vanilla and earthiness. An hour later, it was still tight, but the red fruits were showing up better. I could also better appreciate the oak and lees. It showed medium acidity, medium-light tannins, medium body, and high alcohol. I believed it would get better, so…
…I left it alone until my friend joined me a bit later in the day.
By then it was really quite tasty. All the fruits were opening up. What made it more fun was that my "nosing kit" arrived that day, so we had a fun game. Here's our findings:
YES (outside of already mentioned):
Cinnamon and clove (light), black pepper, anise/licorice (we couldn't distinguish), blackcurrant, eucalyptus, fig, and hints of violet, nutmeg, cypress tree, and smoke.
NO (because we are old clueless farm girls):
BlackBerry
Lavender
Truffle
Earth
Fennel
Tobacco
Tomato
But let me just say "Earth" didn't smell like, well, the earth we've dug up in our fields for years
Also: I know you don't like my Simon Pearce wine glass. It was a gift from my sister so I love it. Plus my wines are not so sophisticated…
