A popular restaurant in Northumberland remains up for sale, weeks after its owner announced a ‘temporary’ closure. And now regulars at Niko’s Greek Taberna are wondering when they’ll get their next fix of its delicious food.

Now, when it comes to great places to go for food and drink, Northumberland has got them in abundance. Not only in the region, often declared as one of the most picturesque in the whole of the UK, got some amazing countryside, coastline and castles, but it also has some top notch restaurants and cosy pubs to check out too. And, while of course Greek cuisine isn’t traditional North East fayre, for the best part of a decades, Niko’s has been pulling in the punters in Morpeth with their Mediterranean dishes.

However, at present, doors to the Bridge Street venue remain closed, after a post was made on Facebook in December to reveal it had shut. Headed up ‘Temporary Closure Notice’ the statement began: ‘We wish to inform you that Niko’s Greek Taberna will be closed this week until January due to private circumstances.’

Understandably the news came as a shock to customers, particularly those who’d booked up to go over the festive period, as the team in charge said they were ‘deeply and sincerely’ sorry for any disappointment and inconvenience, adding that they ‘hoped to welcome them’ in January. However, as of this week, Niko’s, which used to be an Italian restaurant, hadn’t re-opened and the restaurant, having first been listed last year, is still being listed on the Businesses for Sale website with a price of £99,000.

The listing advertises the premises as having room for 80 covers and being in a ‘prime town centre location,’ with the description adding: ‘The restaurant has the advantage of being in an extremely prominent position as you enter Morpeth from the south across the River Wansbeck.’

Last week, locals in Morpeth were left in shock over the sudden closure of the town’s Tomahawk restaurant, with bookings cancelled and a message on the company’s website directing customers to the next nearest venues in Newcastle and the Metrocentre.
