As 2026 got under way, there were signs of an improvement in business expectations in the French retail sector, according to Insee, the French statistics agency.

The business climate index in French retail stood at 104 in December 2025, a gain of seven points, with increases in the general business outlook and sales expectations.

At the same time, while the price of frequently purchased goods in hypermarkets and supermarkets was stable in December on a month-on-month basis, they rose 1.4% on a year-on-year basis. Food and beverages excluding fresh products rose 1.8% year-on-year, with meat up 2.4% and beverages up 4.9%, Insee noted.

Here’s an overview of the top ten supermarket retail chains in France, according to their most recently-available full-year turnover.

1. E.Leclerc
Turnover: €61.9 billion (2024)

French grocery market leader E.Leclerc reported a turnover of €61.9 billion in 2024, including fuel sales. The group operates over 750 stores across France, including hypermarkets, supermarkets, and Drive formats.

As of the P12 period last year (November 2025), E.Leclerc held a 24.9% share of the French market, according to Worldpanel by Numerator, representing a slight increase from 24.6% in the same period the previous year.

2. Carrefour
Turnover: €39.54 billion (2024)

Carrefour Group reported net sales of €85.45 billion at group level in 2024, with €39.54 billion generated in France, up from €38.22 billion the previous year. As of 31 December 2024, the company operated 6,468 stores in France.

Its market share in France was 21.1% as of P12 2025, unchanged from the prior year.

In 2025, rumours persisted that Dutch retailer Ahold Delhaize could be prepared to make a bid for Carrefour, with CEO Alexandre Bompard describing it as a positive indicator of the company’s attractiveness to other players.

3. Les Mousquetaires
Turnover: €32.7 billion (2024)

Groupement Les Mousquetaires, which operates the Intermarché and Netto banners, reported group turnover of €42.5 billion in 2024, a 6.4% increase year-on-year excluding fuel. In France, revenue grew 7.4% year-on-year, also excluding fuel. During the year, the group completed the integration of 273 stores acquired from Groupe Casino.

As of P12 2025, Les Mousquetaires held a 17.2% share of the French market, unchanged from the prior year.

In June 2025, the company announced the sale of eight of its 55 French food production plants, as part of a restructuring of its supply chain and operations.

4. Système U
Turnover: €26.9 billion (2024)

Système U, a cooperative of over 1,800 stores and more than 80,000 employees, reported revenue of €26.9 billion in 2024.

As of P12 2025, the group’s market share in France increased to 12.7%, up from 12.2% the previous year.

Growth at Système U in 2025 was supported by the integration of the Schiever network, a family-owned business that joined the cooperative in 2024 and was rebranded under the U banner during the year.

5. Auchan Retail
Turnover: €16.9 billion (2024)

Auchan Retail reported €16.9 billion in revenue in 2024, an increase of 1.3% year-on-year, supported by the integration of 94 former Casino stores. Food sales remained stable, while non-food sales declined, with like-for-like revenues falling 4.7% for the full year.

As of P12 2025, Auchan’s market share in France decreased to 8.3%, down from 9.0% the previous year.

6. Lidl France
Turnover: €16 billion (2025, estimated)

Lidl France reported an estimated €16 billion in revenue for the 2024/25 fiscal year, down €159 million, or roughly 1%, from the previous year, according to local media reports.

The discounter held an 8.3% share of the French market as of P12 2025, down slightly from 8.4% the previous year.

In September 2025, France’s competition authority approved Lidl’s acquisition of 19 Auchan Supermarché stores and eight petrol stations, expanding its network of over 1,600 stores.

7. Casino Group
Turnover: €8.5 billion (2024)

Casino Group reported consolidated net sales of €8.5 billion for 2024, down 2.6% on a same-store basis and 5.4% overall.

The group is refocusing on convenience retail in France – in 2024, Casino streamlined its store network by closing 768 unprofitable outlets, opening 266 new stores, and converting 95 integrated stores to franchises or business leases.

As part of its Renouveau 2028 strategic plan, Casino Group has established steering committees to guide the company toward becoming a leader in convenience retailing, quick meal solutions, and everyday services.

The retailer held a 3.0% share of the French market as of P12 2025, down from 3.1% the previous year.

8. Aldi France
Turnover: €7.1 billion (2024, estimated)

Aldi France reported estimated turnover of €7.1 billion for 2024, based on its share of Aldi Nord’s total group sales of €29 billion across approximately 5,300 stores, of which 1,300 are in France.

The chain held a 3.1% share of the French market as of P12 2025, up from 3.0% a year earlier.

9. Monoprix
€4.1 billion (2024, estimated)

Monoprix, part of the Casino Group, reported estimated sales of €4.1 billion for 2024, with flat growth compared to the previous year. During the year, the brand introduced a new quick meal solutions concept, La Cantine, which had been implemented in six stores by Q3 2025.

As of 30 September 2025, the Monoprix network included 622 stores, split between 312 company-owned locations and 310 franchise-operated stores.

10. Picard
Turnover: €1.8 million (2025)

Frozen foods retailer Picard reported €1.82 billion in sales in its financial year ending March 2025, a 1.2% increase on a reported basis, while like-for-like sales declined 0.8% due to calendar effects.

The company opened 40 new stores during the year, including 26 directly operated and 14 franchised locations. Digital sales also grew, representing 5.0% of total revenue in full-year 2025, up from 4.6% in FY 2024.

As of 31 March 2025, Picard operated 1,195 stores in France, six in Belgium, two in Luxembourg, and 11 franchised stores in Japan. The company celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2024.

Dining and Cooking
