Ok, I almost feel embarrassed posting this because some of the cakes on here are absolutely amazing! I made this one a few years back when I was in pastry school with a classmate. Between planning, getting the frosting and agreeing on color/patterns, it took like 1.5 hours (We both were perfectionists). It’s a red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting. I am curious how long does it normally take for you all to decorate your cakes? You can give me a range if you want, feel free to post any examples, I love looking at baked goods 😋

If I include the crumb coat and everything, then it’s easily 3-5 hours. I would love for it to be quicker but idk I’m just slow

Depends on design but usually 2 days

    It depends…

How big the cake is, what type of decoration is required etc. Probably between one and three hours on average. I have spent over 20 hours on some wedding cakes (mostly as gifts, not paid commissions).

This is soo cute. What’s the icing? Homemade or store bought? I am just getting started hobby baking and I LOVE the look and texture of that icing!

Honestly? For freaking ever. What’s worse, the more time I have, the longer it takes. I just cannot figure out why it takes me so long to ice these cakes, even when there’s no coloring and just basic piping.

I do this for a living so don’t judge yourself based on my times but an 8 inch double layer cake with fairly simple decorations would take me about 20 minutes. Something like a filled full sheet cake covered in buttercream flowers would take me like an hour, hour and a half tops or I’d be hearing about it from my boss lol

For a really simple one (just slap some frosting on so it can get eaten) I can do it in under an hour. But to actually *decorate* it’s at least three, up to five

I’ve had cakes take up to multiple work days. It just depends on the design. I also mostly do 3D sculpture type of decorations, so it usually takes longer.

It totally varies on how much time I have. I can start to finish, built and decorate a cake in maybe 2 hours for something basic design wise, because I always chill it before I actually decorate so it’s easier to fix mistakes or take off piping, but I’m known to take too many breaks and spend too much time looking at inspo pics and changing my mind 19403 times before I actually do it.

My first order this year was a cupcake order, I can do 2 dozen cupcakes in like 15 min, but I took forever and it was easy over an hour and a half because I spent too much time trying to make a luster splatter that I never ended up using 🫣 but the inspo pic to the product was on point and they were dope, lolol. Hubs takes my pics and this might be one of my favorite ones he’s taken, something about the glitter and close up, I *might* finally change my cover photo on my FB cake page from 10 years ago… But probably not lolol

I made my first ever tall layered cake for a big birthday party at my friend’s very persistent request. That five layered bitch took me 20 hours. At the party, I had several other moms ask me to make a cake for their kids, but a) unless I get faster at it very quickly, there is no reasonable price I could charge to make money, and b) I don’t ever want to make another tall cake again after this lol
