Whats your way to clean your portafilter after every shot?

Mine looks like this usually. Puck comes out easy and in one piece after one knock, but whats left still feels like too much to wipe into a cloth. I always rinse it under the faucet, but maybe theres a quicker way?

You don’t. You keep that in and just put in your next dose. Over time, a wonderful patina full of flavour will develop. It is imperative, that you never clean it off.

You have to buy a boar bristle brush custom fitted to your basket if you ever want decent shots. I’ve heard mahogany handles make your extraction a few points higher.

I just rinse and wipe. Once every week or two a soak in Cafiza.

  3. Rinse in the sink and scrub with my thumb and fingers to make sure all grinds are gone and it feels nice and smooth

Rinse under group for 2-3 sec. Now your group is also flushed between shots.

Am I the only one here that uses a sponge and soap?

I rinse under the group head, then wipe it out with a dry cloth. This has the added benefit of clearing the shower screen and acting as a cooling flush for my next shot.

  7. Rinse then drip water over countertops taking back to machine. Wipe counter tops with cloth.

I have my butler do it for me.
Oh, wait, wrong sub. I wash it under the sink.

Rinse under group, quick towel wipe, quick towel wipe shower screen. That’s probably more of a pain though if you don’t have the drip tray plumbed to a catch bucket

Wipe it with a rag and then shake the rag into the sink

Don’t normally end up with any grounds left in it, but wipe with a dry towel before pulling the next shot. When I know I’m not making any more coffee rinse it in the sink.

I am unhinged, this is what I do:

Remove any coffee from the ream, put it back again into the group head and pull a short shot.

By this point any coffee that remained is dislodged and floating in some water. I remove the water and dry it thouroughly.

I do this mostly for two reasons:
    – I need to draw a blank between shots either way.
    – Using the hot water from the shot not only warms up again the portafilter but it also makes way easier to dry, which is in my experience very important to get consistent results.

  13. I run it under the kitchen spray tap with warm water and use my hands to clean any grounds out. Occasionally, every few weeks, I do a thorough cleaning in an ultrasonic bath.

In between shots, either rinse under group head or sink and then wipe out with a black microfibre.

After last shot, rinse under sink tap until water appears clear. Wipe dry, flush group head and wipe shower screen, put portafilter back in group head.

  15. I just toss the spent grounds, basket and portafilter into the bin and use a brand new set each shot. Saves water.

  16. Rinse under grouphead then wipe with microfiber cloth

Why don’t you want to wipe? Either way you’re going to wipe.

If it’s really bad I hit the button on the machine and run some water into it. Helps clean the shower screen at the same time.

But if you’re making a next cup you still need to wipe it dry.

Rinse with hot water and dry with a microfiber.

Lick it clean. The little crunchies are a chef’s snack. Also the secret to having a dialed in machine.

I set it at the side of the sink to clean after I pour my milk or water, then forget about it, clean it under the tap with a clean rag and hot water three hours later when I put my mug in the sink, then I leave it to drip dry on the corner of the sink, forget about it again for an hour, wander into the kitchen to make another espresso, reclean it because i can’t remember if I already did, then drip water on the floor from the water-making spouts as I carry it to the grinder.

    I’m a little surprised there’s another way

Between drinks I hit it on the cup rinser I added to my sink and then dry with my towel. When I’m all done though I wash in the sink with warm water and dish soap like all my other dishes. Coffee has oils so dish soap helps remove the oils just need to make sure you rinse well so no soap residue remains

Don’t have a sink near my machine (it is what it is I have a wife) so I use the hot water spigot in the machine to rinse it over a larger steam pitcher or I pop it back into the group head and flush it then pull out and tilts out as much sediment as I can and wipe with towel.

  23. CoffeeLoverSupremo

I rinse it on machine then dry with dedicated coffee clothes and put back on.

  24. Remember to wipe from the front back and not the other way around.

  25. Mekanikol

Rinse it out, wipe it down, return to machine.

I have the sworks portafilter so for me I have to use a plunger to push the puck out and then clean with a brush then water/soap and hit it with a towelette

  27. guynamedky

I use paper filters on top of the puck to eliminate 90% of the mess. I wipe with a towel if I am pulling back to back shots or I rinse in the sink if I am done for the day.
