Hello,

I recently got one the those boxes that grow mushrooms out of the side of it for food this past Christmas. I hadn’t opened it up but this morning noticed mushrooms growing from the top of it, and when I opened it there was this tangled mess of mushroomy stems inside. I removed them from the grow bag and am now soaking the bag as suggested by the box. Is it safe to eat the jumbled mess of mushroom stuff in the picture attached? Thank you!

Usually when I’ve done these I’ll cut off the part closest to the substrate, wash it real well and use it in stock. The rest is fine, but I would get what looks like cardboard off it before cutting up personally. Since it’s mostly stems it will probably be better diced up and sautéed so it can get soft again

  2. Yep, they’re perfectly safe to eat.

I don’t know if those boxes have the instruction, but next time if you’re waiting to have it grow you can put them in the fridge and it’ll keep them dormant for up to a few months.

You cannot sit on these things and have them wait until you’re ready to grow them.

Good, the good thing is you can actually continue growing mushrooms out of this until it just stops one day.
