This is some of my favorite Japanese home cooking. It is so good!

I like the version Yoshihiro Murata has in his cookbook for people who don’t have easy access to Japanese ingredients. Ground beef, waxy potatoes, frozen peas, and a broth made with soy sauce, water and sugar. I use a bag of those little yellow potatoes, don’t even bother peeling them.

Someday I will make it with shaved steak and full size potatoes, maybe even extra veggies.

But this recipe works for me, and it’s something that my dad will actually eat.

It’s one of my favorites, even over curry.

  4. Love it, been cooking it for 3 years or so and it’s the best with piping hot rice 🙏🏽

It’s alright, I still prefer western pot roast over nikujaga tho

Just made it last week. It’s so comforting on a cold or wet day. Easy to make. What’s not to like?

  7. So delicious! Wish I knew how to make it. It reminds me of Oden

  8. Tastes like a basic stew to me. Reminiscent of hachée, which is a traditional dish in my country. Nothing special but i don’t mesn it in the negative sense

  9. Just made it the other night for the first time and loved it. If anyone has a “real” recipe i would love to try more!

It’s ok, but often it’s made too sweet for my tastes.

Nothing like it when it’s snowing outside your apartment

You can always tell when Nikujaga is on the menu in a Japanese neighborhood, it’s a very comforting smell, particularly in winter.
