Let’s combat the AI liars by posting legitimate cakes that were some of our first efforts. Here’s one of mine from 1983 (yep – I’m old!) Let’s see yours.

OP lets also consider that people posting first cakes made in last 20 years had benefits of videos and online help. Prior to internet there was only paper instruction. MKes a difference in learning time

I love seeing cake styles from the past! It looks so professional! Reminds me of the snowmen cookies from the bakery that my mom used to buy in the 90’s.

I was the designated Christmas cookie maker and pup cake baker, so I had a tiny bit of piping experience before, but this was my first whole cake (for humans) in 2022. A simple carrot cake with cream cheese frosting and pecans that I’ve since upgraded to a reverse creamed carrot cake base, browned butter cream cheese frosting, and candied pecans.

Okay so. First layer cake I ever made, which was made during the pandemic just to pick up another hobby. Chocolate cake with chocolate ganache filling (I think?) and details made of modeling chocolate. I have a background in art, including a couple sculpture classes, so the moon was made with the sculpting tools I already had, and the stars were just from a mold.

Before then I had only done like, sheet cakes with icing from a cup spread on top still in the tray. Classic.

EDIT: Made an edit and accidentally deleted the picture, oops, it’s back now

Poor Denise. She’s never had a birthday or Christmas gift that wasn’t combined.

I don’t know guys, I’m scrolling through this thinking, “there’s no way some of these are their ACTUAL first cakes…” I baked my first cake for my older brother’s 14th or 15th birthday and it was a basic box-mix chocolate cake that I destroyed my kitchen making and then drizzling homemade vanilla icing across the top by flinging a ziplock bag across the top like a crazy person. I added some fresh berries, sliced up an orange and fanned it out in the corner, and then added sprinkles.

It stayed in the glass casserole dish it was baked in, and I thought it was PERFECT.

Oh gosh, I WISH I had a picture of the cake my at the time bestie an I made for her son’s first birthday… I was still in college so between 15 & 20yrs ago. We baked box cakes and then cut and carved it into a dragon and then decorated it. Had NO idea it would take so much time and effort. We stayed up til the early morning working on it the night before his party. We were so tired that at the end we were just throwing sprinkles at it like “fuck it. He’s 1, it’s good enough.”

Neither of us had any experience doing a cake like that so all of the frosting (also store bought but colored by us) was slathered on there with a butter knife while bits of cake were sticking to it since we didn’t know to chill it — they were cool though so at least we weren’t working with melting frosting.

I think we ultimately made the wings and spikes out of cardboard that we also frosted 🤣

In the end it looked pretty good. We were really proud of ourselves and a lot of the people at the party complimented us on it.

But it was NOTHING like the stuff you see even in this thread lmao

I’m still more of a lurker here. Thank you for this thread, it’s giving me more confidence to jump in!
