Totally speechless! 124 year old starter from goodwill
The book was printed in ‘71, the starter packet says that it is 75 years old. Thought it was cool enough to share, should I try using it?

What’s the worst thing that could happen? 😉

I personally wouldn’t seeing as the packet is not sealed as a result of the staples

I’d smell it. Does it have that goodwill smell? I’d look at it with a magnifying glass. Anything moving? If no, I’d try it.

Note that by the time it is bubbling along pretty much any yeasties in the starter will have been supplanted by local yeasts – that’s just how a starter works. I’m in WA and was amazed when I took my starter (which started in WI) down to San Francisco that within a couple of months it had that SF sourdough flavor. Brought it home and it reverted to a mellower WA blend. So go for it – just know that while you can legit state it is 124 years old, that what you will end up with is the same as your neighbor down the street who started two months ago.
I have been using Carls starter from 1847 and it’s giving me great loaves of bread. Go for it!!

Yes where did you get it if I may ask and is the starter in a package dehydrated you found inside the book curious:)

I didn’t notice the other pictures how cool is that heck I would definitely bring it to life surely the bacteria and yeast strains must live on yes it will continue to feed and produce more however it’s like DNA it’s always going to be present please if you give it life will you keep us posted TY and I think the fact it is so old makes it so intriguing you can imagine all of the different people who used it and in what part of the world they were good luck:)

Apparently Jack In the Box had a “sourdough jack” cheeseburger at some point, so good luck goofing this

There’s no way that yeast is alive tho.
