A conveyor belt sushi restaurant chain is due to arrive in the Richmond region later this year.

Kura Revolving Sushi Bar has signed on to open a location at the Trader Joe’s-anchored Short Pump Station shopping center at 11301 W. Broad St.

Revolving sushi restaurants have a nontraditional setup that includes a conveyor belt containing plates of sushi passing by each table and seat, allowing guests to pick and choose different pieces of sushi as they go by.

According to its website, Kura is not a buffet-style concept, but rather guests instead pay by the plate. Its menu includes multiple types of sushi including rolls, nigiri and sashimi, along with ramen and udon noodle bowls. It also offers beer and sake, as well as desserts like sesame balls and mochi ice cream.

Kura, which will be the first restaurant of revolving sushi restaurant in the Richmond region, is leasing a 3,200-square-foot space that had previously been home to Persis Indian Grill. Thalhimer’s Jim Ashby brokered the deal.

Kura touts itself as the largest revolving sushi restaurant chain in the country with more than 80 locations nationwide, though the company has around 600 restaurants across the globe. The Kura brand goes back to the 1970s when it was founded in Japan. The company then created its U.S. subsidiary, Kura Sushi USA, in 2008.

A Kura spokesperson said they’re hoping to open the Short Pump location in the fall.

Short Pump Station, which sold to new ownership a year ago, has landed a handful of new tenants in recent years, including smoothie bowl chain Playa Bowls, chocolatier Gearharts Fine Chocolates and skincare studio GLO30.
