Romance is in the eye of the romancer, I reckon. But a few things identify a romantic restaurant for me.

I want a restaurant to simultaneously feel intimate and significant. I want to be treated with warm care that respects my space. It also means food that either wows me or comforts me, with bonus points for both.

A romantic dining experience for me can mean anything from a street taco at a picnic table to a wax paper burger or a stinging bowl of noodles at a counter-service restaurant that transports me to a night market in Thailand, but for this Top 10 romantic restaurant list, I eschewed the nontraditional and hewed to the type of refined, upmarket establishments I think most people look to for a romantic experience.

If you’re solely looking for high-end dining, check out my list of the Best Fine Dining Restaurants in Austin.

The list is ordered by an unscientific blend of romantic vibes and quality cuisine.

1. Lenoir

Despite being one of the best restaurants in Austin for more than a decade, the charming shabby chic bungalow from married chefs Todd Duplechan and Jessica Maher still feels like a secret. The “hot weather climate” cuisine bounces around the globe, giving a meal a sense of adventure, and the wine garden adds a pastoral romance. Lenoir has a tiny dining room and a big heart.

West Texas and France are two of the most romantic places in the world, and Richard Hargreave and Claudia Lee’s restaurant, which opened in 2025, blends the best of both worlds. An instrumental playlist — with music from African jazz to Spaghetti Western soundtracks — dainty half-curtains, warm lighting and Western art set the vibe. And executive chef Casey Walls’ menu of French classics with a Texas twist grounds it with soul, and helped make it the Statesman’s Best New Restaurant of 2025.

If the notion of dining on locally sourced and seasonal food is romantic to you, then Barley Swine, the Statesman’s #1 restaurant of 2025, will have you swooning. The passion of a front-of-house staff that feels fully vested in the restaurant’s locavore mission, artful plating of a multi-course prix fixe menu and an atmosphere as warm as the restaurant’s hearth all add narrative and poetry to this Michelin-starred love letter to Texas.

There’s a lust for life that flirts with hedonism permeating everything at Justine’s, from the music to the design to the cocktails and, of course, the French cuisine. Dip in for oysters and a bottle of chenin blanc; dig in deeper with steak and Châteauneuf-du-Pape; or pop a bottle or two of champagne and see if the night gets as hot as the French onion soup.

AMER/AMERICAN-STATESMAN FILE

Austin’s grande dame of fine dining has no equal when it comes to elegance, refinement and big city class. This is where you go when you want to get dressed up, treated like a million bucks and dine like someone accustomed to sipping champagne in silk pajamas. Cozying up by the fireplace in the bar area with a pre- or post-dinner cocktail almost feels like something out of a movie, so do the valets’ uniforms.

The romance here is more genteel than lingerie, but when I want to feel taken care of with a perfectly made Vieux Carré or expertly seared piece of fish, when I want to be surprised by the reimagining of the Southern food that has defined American cuisine, when I want to fall in love with the simplicity of a warm biscuit with butter, when I want to ride the vibration of a restaurant humming with complete confidence, I head to Olamaie.

The raging open-fire grill, the leather banquettes and stunning views of the tower-lined Shoal Creek give a cinematic sense of occasion to the restaurant defined by intense preparation, meticulous plating and buttoned-up team service befitting its Michelin-starred status. You’ll feel like a couple dining in a Lexus or American Express commercial.

STEPHEN SPILLMAN FOR AMERICAN-STATESMAN

Cantilevered light fixtures dangle from soaring ceilings, vines lace a brick wall bordering a dramatic courtyard that looks plucked from Mexico City and chiaroscuro lighting defies the laws of optics. Opaque glass walls wrap the bottom half of the restaurant’s exterior, while the windows above reveal the stunning towers surrounding the space. The cinematic Comedor will transport you with its sophisticated space and cuisine.

Maybe it’s the sense that you are in a fine dining restaurant transplanted from a walkable European city, the fact that said elegant restaurant serves a vegan tasting menu, or the fact that the thoughtful minimalism feels so removed from the flash and glitz of so much of modern Austin dining, but dinner at Fabrik gives the sense that you are on vacation with your beloved, all the emails and kids left in another time zone.

PROVIDED BY MML HOSPITALITY

No, you can’t enter through the back, weave your way through the kitchen and take the restaurant’s prime table in a tracking shot directed by Martin Scorsese, but you can still feel like a made man when you dine at this red sauce Italian restaurant — or, at least, feel like you’re dining at Musso and Frank in Los Angeles or Carbone in New York City. McGuire Moorman Lambert restaurants set a scene the way few other places can, and Sammie’s is a prime example of that stagecraft.
