The real 1950s Waldorf Salad – light, elegant, and nothing like the sugary versions you see today.
This is the classic recipe as it was actually served in mid-century America – with crisp apples, celery, grapes, walnuts, and just enough mayonnaise to bring it all together.
Long before marshmallows and pineapple entered the picture, Waldorf Salad was a refined luncheon dish. Created in the late 19th century at the Waldorf-Astoria and perfected in the 1950s, it was meant to be cool, restrained, and beautifully balanced – not a dessert in disguise.
In this video, we’re going back to that original idea:
a proper Waldorf Salad with clean flavors, good texture, and a sense of quiet elegance. No strange additions, no shortcuts – just a timeless classic done the way it was meant to be.
If you enjoy vintage recipes, mid-century food culture, and old-fashioned cooking with a bit of charm, you’re in the right place here at Apaulo’s Diner.

Nothing more disappointing than a mealy apple. I really need to figure out a better way of figuring when an apple will be mealy before I buy… I was very disappointed with the last bag of Pink Ladys I bought.
Wonderful! Cannot wait to try your recipe. Love your vids, thank you! 😁
