Froth your milk properly for the best cup of coffee.
Problem Solved
Almond croissants. Decadent desserts. Fresh bread and baguettes.
These are just a few of the French-inspired artisanal baked goods that will delight customers at the newest MK Cannelle location.
From distinguished and French-trained pastry chef Matt Knio, MK Cannelle is set to open at 6:30 a.m. Feb. 20 in the former Paint Creek Cider Mill location in Rochester.
This Rochester location marks the seventh retail MK Cannelle location for Knio. Around metro Detroit, MK Cannelle pâtisseries are known for beautiful artisanal pastries and desserts, from tarts to cakes to an impressive selection of croissants, plus crusty baguettes and breads.
Choosing the Rochester location, Knio called the area “beautiful” and said being near the Paint Creek Trail is what drew him to the location. Another draw was the parking, he said.
“It’s the ‘comfortability,’ for people to park and enjoy their moment to enjoy their dessert, coffee or tea,” he said. “It’s next to a nature preserve, and there’s a river. There’s a walking preserve behind the store. People park and go biking, walking.”
The Rochester location will have the same kind of layout, Knio said, as Keego Harbor, which opened in July 2024. The 2,000-square-foot space in the former cider mill will seat nearly 40 people, and there’s a large patio.
Popular items at MK Cannelle, Knio said, are definitely the croissants, with sweet and savory offerings. Its almond croissants are best sellers, followed by the pistachio croissant and the cinnamon rope. MK Cannelle locations also serve coffee and sandwiches. More recently, Knio said, they’ve added soups and expanded the sandwich line.
Knio said the soup offerings change every couple of days and are vegetarian-based, with varieties like tomato, pumpkin and French onion.
Knio also owns Golden Wheat Bakehouse, a wholesale location that supplies his locations as well as nearly three dozen retail coffee shops around metro Detroit. The wholesale will stop providing baked goods to retail locations on March 30, Knio said, to concentrate on his seven stores, with a vision of having more than a dozen locations.
“I want to open at least a store a year,” he said.
Across the locations and bakehouse, Knio said he employs about 100 people. MK Cannelle’s most recent store opened in September in Northville. Other locations are in Ann Arbor, Birmingham, downtown Detroit, Farmington and Keego Harbor.
