After their event was postponed, the Hampton Roads Cancer Care Foundation repurposed 500 gourmet meals for local shelters in Norfolk.
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — The Hampton Roads Cancer Care Foundation is giving back this winter season following the postponement of the Waves of Hope Gala.
The dinner concert charity event was originally scheduled for Saturday night at The Dome in Virginia Beach, but was postponed due to this weekend’s snowstorm. Organizers said the cancellation was announced after chicken and short ribs for 500 people had already been prepared.
Rather than let that food go to waste, the foundation on Monday gave out the 500 gourmet meals to people across the community in Norfolk, with the meals being delivered to PIN Ministries and local shelters to feed those in need.
“We were so disappointed, but we thought we could do something positive,” said Audra Dementa, the executive director for the Hampton Roads Cancer Care Foundation. “And the silver lining is that the meals that were already prepared. We weren’t going to let them go to waste.”
“They’re helping people that have cancer, and we have tons who are out here and are hungry, and so they’re not getting beef short ribs all the time. So, they’ll get an extra special meal that was going to be for sponsors that were going to come to the event, so that’s a blessing, too,” said PIN Ministries CEO Dallas Stamper.
As for the Waves of Hope gala, the Hampton Roads Cancer Care Foundation said a rescheduled date will be announced within the next week.
