Original Chicken & Ribs, a landmark of Charlotte’s West End and the city’s oldest Black-owned restaurant, is expanding its reach with the launch of a new food truck, The Hustlin’ Hen.
First opened in 1952 by Otis and Lucinda Blackmon, the restaurant served as a vital community hub during the Jim Crow era and was famously listed in the Green Book as a safe haven for Black travelers. Today, their grandson, Jermaine Blackmon, runs the business and looks to build upon that legacy by taking the brand mobile.
The Hustlin’ Hen will offer a “street food vibe,” distinguishing it from the comfort food served at the brick-and-mortar location, Blackmon told QCity Metro. The initial menu will feature wings, barbecue sandwiches, fish sandwiches and loaded fries.
Blackmon said the food truck has been in development for about a year, though the concept dates back to the COVID-19 pandemic. Back then, he said, the restaurant was experiencing high volume, and a mobile unit was considered a way to alleviate pressure on the kitchen.
Blackmon said the food truck won’t compete on the late-night scene but will target business parks and Atrium Health locations, looking to draw new diners to the Beatties Ford Road corridor.
