Ina Garten says her simple onion dip is a Super Bowl favorite on her site. Her jalapeño margaritas are spicy, citrusy and her top party drink pick. Both recipes are simple to make and perfect for game day gatherings.
Football is exciting to watch, but let’s be honest: The food we serve when we gather to watch the big game is just as thrilling, if not more so. Also exciting? Just in time for Super Bowl Sunday, Ina Garten revealed the two recipes that are her most popular during Super Bowl season.
In her Substack newsletter, The Barefoot Contessa admitted that while she doesn’t watch football, she “loves the watch party that goes with it.” Since Super Bowl watch parties often include tasty treats like jalapeño poppers and Buffalo chicken wings, we’re right there with her.
While the two recipes Garten says are most popular on her website before the big game aren’t exactly standard football food fare, the surprising menu items sound perfect for a Super Bowl party. “My Pan-Fried Onion Dip recipe is always wildly popular on my website ahead of the Super Bowl,” Garten wrote in the newsletter. “The onions are slowly caramelized with ¼ teaspoon of cayenne to give them a little heat, and they’re completely addictive.”
As for Garten’s own top choice? That would be a refreshingly spicy drink on offer.
“Every party also needs a delicious drink,” she added. “Jalapeño Margaritas are spicy, citrusy, and so refreshing.”
Garten’s onion dip calls for yellow onions, cayenne pepper, salt, black pepper, cream cheese, sour cream and mayonnaise and is a snap to make. Simply saute the onions in vegetable oil and butter along with the spices for about 30 minutes and allow them to cool. Mix sour cream, mayo and cream cheese with an electric mixer, then stir in the onions and mix well. Serve the dip, which would be perfect served with fresh veggies and your favorite variety of chips, at room temperature.
The jalapeño margs are simple, too, and start with tequila that’s been allowed to infuse with a halved, fresh jalapeño pepper for 24 hours. That spicy tequila then gets combined with other classic margarita ingredients: triple sec, lime and lemon juice, honey, and salt, then served over ice. For the non-drinkers on your guest list, it’d be easy to recreate a version of this cocktail that appeals to the sober set. Just infuse a zero-proof tequila alternative instead and omit the triple sec or choose a triple sec-flavored alcohol-free syrup.
Whether you’re rooting for the Seattle Seahawks or the New England Patriots (or halftime performer Bad Bunny!) on Super Bowl Sunday, delicious game day snacks are a must-have. We recommend Kylie Kelce’s favorite snack—apples and cheese—or chips and guacamole—a snack Erin Andrews says is a game day must-have in her house.
Or, if you’re keeping things even more simple on game day, you could serve guests one of the NFL’s most-used snack foods: Uncrustables peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
