SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — About 20 restaurants locations throughout the Hostess City will be partaking in Restaurant Week until Sunday, hoping to draw in more customers.
The 12-day event gives businesses a chance to bounce back during a slow time of the year.
Dining downtown can be a hassle during the peak travel season in Savannah. However, Savannah Restaurant Week not only offers deals for diners, but it also offers less wait time and more accessible parking during the off-season.
If you’ve ever wanted a reason to try a new restaurant, or finally order the dish you usually skip, Savannah Restaurant Week is the perfect excuse. Participating Savannah restaurants are rolling out special menus designed to show off their best flavors and family recipes, all at a set price.
WSAV spoke with organizers on how to get the best value and with participating chefs on how they are showcasing family-inspired dishes for the event.
Right along River Street, two downtown spots are using Restaurant Week as a chance to tell their stories through food, hoping locals will walk through the door and maybe find a new favorite place to unwind.
One of the participating places is Savannah Tequila Company.
“It’s very important for us,” said Carlos Ortega, a head chef at Savannah Tequila Company. “I mean, I know Restaurant Week is a sign for a big opportunity for us to attract more local people. We know in this kind of weather that there’s not going to be a lot of tourists visiting the city. So, we still need a way to run the restaurant and offer good food.”
Chef Ortega said his restaurant week dish comes straight from Mexico, meals his family would spend weekends making together.
“Some of the recipes we serve are from where I go back to my family,” said Ortega. “I go to my mother, who teaches me, to my grandmother, who teaches my mother. So, all those kinds of things, I keep it really, really authentic and really nice.”
The event also works to bring locals back into dining rooms during what’s typically one of the slowest stretches for tourism. For many restaurants, January and early February often mean fewer visitors.
Just a few steps down River Street is Boar’s Head Grill & Tavern, another participant in this year’s Savannah Restaurant Week.
“We are the longest-standing restaurant on River Street,” shared Jordy Parfait, the General Manager and a Chef at Boar’s Head Grill & Tavern. “A lot of locals don’t really know about us because they don’t come to River Street, so it gives them a chance to come and experience what we actually have to offer. Everything in the house is cooked from scratch. It’s absolutely amazing. Everybody should try it at least once. It’s great.”
Savannah Restaurant Week runs now through Sunday, Feb. 8, with participating restaurants across downtown, including River Street and Broughton Street.
Participating restaurants this year include:
22 Square Restaurant and Bar
Boar’s Head Grill & Tavern
Broken Keel – River Street
Silk Route Restaurant and Lounge
Tortuga’s Island Grille
