Brother-and-sister team Sol and Ghazi Bashirian took over the Centinela Avenue pizzeria their father ran and reimagined it into Sunday Gravy, a locally loved red-sauce joint that embodies Inglewood’s richness and history. Chef Sol’s menu modernizes classic pastas and soul food dishes (think shrimp and grits with an Italian twist; chicken Parmesan sandwiches “hot dipped” for heat); servers whiz around with specials like chile-sauce-swathed chicken wings and crusty pizza boats. The place gets packed with local families, where the whole clan can be treated to always-warm, always-quick service and satisfying food.
The sliver of a dining room packs in ample personality: part red-sauce joint, part diner, part vibe destination. Tiffany-style light fixtures looming from the ceiling give it the fun, nostalgic feel of 1990s chain restaurants without the dark wood–paneled walls and musty carpeting. Everything here feels bright: if you sit in the smaller side dining room, you will benefit from rivulets of natural light pouring through its windows.
While Calabrian chile wings aren’t always on the menu, they’re a special worth seeking out if you can (and can often be ordered on the catering menu around sporting events). An intensely savory scallion ranch sets them apart in a wing-saturated city.
